The Romans didn't invent concrete, but they did establish its versatility. The structural ingenuity of the Baths of Caracalla, the Pont du Gard and the Pantheon would not be surpassed for a thousand years.

But if the dazzling concrete curves and cantilevers of modern architecture have matched the Romans' for style and structure, today's standard recipe, 2,000 years later, remains in some ways inferior.

New research into Pozzolanic cement, so named for the corner of the Bay of Naples where the ash of Mount Vesuvius facilitated its creation, shows the advantages of the Roman method. Their mixture for hydraulic concrete, a blend of volcanic ash and lime, has a tougher molecular structure than its modern equivalent. It's unusually resistant to fragmenting and nearly immune to the corrosion caused by salt water. That's why Roman jetties and port structures have weathered two salty millennia, while our maritime concrete creations degrade within a matter of decades.

So why aren't we doing as the Romans did?

For one thing, the methods largely vanished with the fall of Rome. "They really haven't been examined at a very fine scale until now," says Marie Jackson, one of the researchers who has been studying the molecular composition of Roman seawater concrete. "There's been a general lack of knowledge about what the Roman model could produce."

One problem with ordinary Portland cement, which is used, along with pebbles and sand, to make most of the modern world's concrete, is that it requires an enormous amount of energy. The lime and clay mixture must be heated at over 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, making the manufacture of cement the third-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., and responsible for 5 to 10 percent of carbon dioxide production worldwide.

In contrast the Roman method, recorded by Vitruvius, requires 10 percent less lime by weight and two-thirds the baking temperature, greatly reducing its environmental impact. It also has a molecular structure that insures strength and longevity, meaning that, like the piers of the great Roman harbors, it seldom requires replacement. Aluminum-rich ash, reacting with lime and seawater, forms a highly stable mineral called tobormorite, which modern cement can only imitate.

"What I'd like to see happen is that we learn to understand the fine-scale structure of this material, and begin at least experimental work to reproduce it so it can become a mainstream building material," Jackson says.

Reuters reports:

"A Cypriot artist found a novel way to protest over Cyprus's financial meltdown on Monday, lining up 20 sculptures resembling a cross between toilets and tombstones outside the island's Central Bank.

"Arranged in two rows on a pavement outside the building, the white 'toilets' made of concrete and plaster caused traffic to slow down along a busy Nicosia avenue, with many drivers honking their horns in approval.

"From the rear, the 'toilets' looked like headstones.

"'I felt the need to protest the situation my country is in … and I think the choice of toilets has a pretty clear symbolism to everyone,' artist Andreas Efstathiou (above) told Reuters.

"Cyprus was forced to close a major bank and seize savings at a second in March to salvage the island's banking sector and secure 10 billion euros in aid from international lenders. Thousands of people lost their life savings.

"Efstathiou, who has been working on the design for two months, said that although Cyprus's recent financial woes were partly down to mistakes made by commercial banks, he chose the independent central bank for its symbolic value.

"Central bank spokeswoman Aliki Stylianou said artists were free to express themselves, but declined to comment on the specific choice made by Efstathiou.

Artist uses tombstone-style toilets to protest Cyprus financial meltdown – what are your comments?

Impeach Obama protest slows traffic on I-5

by Dr. Eowyn

Impeach1Ken Stone reports for Carlsbad Patch that on Saturday, June 8, 2013, holding signs saying "Remember Benghazi," "Obama Lies" and "No Amnesty," a group of patriots held an Impeach Obama demonstration on an I-5 overpass in the seaside city of Carlsbad in North San Diego County, California.

Advertised on meetup.com, the event was described as anti-Obama, which includes "anti-amnesty, gun rights, eligibility skepticism, illegal wars, Benghazi, etc., whatever your preferred reason is that Obama should be removed from office."

The meetup posting said the demonstration would begin with a 10 a.m. setup. Organizers estimated 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles would pass the protest. By 12:15 pm, traffic on I-5 was slowed as far north as Camp Pendleton, but speeds quickly returned to normal after the overpass, Patch.

Via email, Tea Party activist and advocate of impeachment Roger Ogden apologized for "any small inconvenience" the motorists may have suffered. But he explains that "it is also inconvenient to the entire nation to have a lawless president in office who murders American citizens without judicial process; wages illegal war without congressional approval required by the Constitution, including a terroristic drone war, which has killed about 5,000 people including many children and innocent bystanders in allied countries; dictates law by executive order and generally trashes the Constitution. It is not even clear that he is eligible for the office he holds."

The next demonstration is planned for Independence Day weekend, Ogden said.

Here are some more photos from the "Impeach Obama" demonstration, all provided by Mr. Ogden.
