Psst: There are four separate scandals going on at EPA right now

posted at 9:21 pm on June 10, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Oh, that we were not flooded with scandals already, this might actually rate some coverage. But alas, as it is, even a news junkie like myself didn't know there were four separate EPA scandals going on until Gabriel Malor laid it out for me. You should follow him because he's smart.

Four simultaneous scandals is the most of any agency we're talking about right now. It's gonna take a lot more attention before the EPA is forced to clean house. More than a couple congressional letters, I would think, which is why I'm writing about it now. I don't know if it's because EPA is relatively more popular than some of the other agencies embroiled in scandal now, or if these scandals simply affect fewer people directly, but this is probably the best chance we've had in a while to curtail EPA's prosperity-destroying activities.

Make sure you go over and read the whole thing, but here's the run-down.

1) The EPA gave an ethics award to fake employee, "Richard Windsor," who was already just an unethically created e-mail alias for the agency's former head, Lisa P. Jackson.

HotAir's covered this story several times, but it really escalated to a point I don't think I would have even concocted for a fictional account of government stupidity for fear it might feel like a reach. But government stupidity, undaunted by such a challenge and unbound by the limits of my imagination indeed awarded the "scholar of ethical behavior" award, among other professional recognitions, to a dude who does not exist and was created merely to unethically circumvent FOIA requests.

As the result of the persistence of the Competitive Enterprise Institute in pursuing their Freedom of Information Act requests, we found out late last year that Jackson had been using an epa.gov email account under the name of "Richard Windsor," and that in practice it looked an awful lot like a deliberate attempt by Jackson to fly beneath the transparency radar when communicating about costly and publicly controversial EPA ideas and initiatives. Even better, it now looks like the EPA awarded the non-existent Richard Windsor with several of the oh-so-august bureaucracy's required workplace certifications

.
As Erika wrote, this is real life.

2) The EPA makes conservatives pay a fortune for FOIAs to be granted while waiving fees for liberal groups.

According to research from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, whose fellow Chris Horner uncovered "Richard Windsor:"

Specifically, CEI asserts that the EPA is waiving FOIA fees for what it describes as left-wing groups – like the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and EarthJustice – while it "systematically denies waivers for groups on the right," according to CEI Senior Fellow Christopher Horner.

Horner said his research shows that from January 2012 to Spring 2013 the fees for "green" groups were waived in 75 out of 82 cases. Meanwhile, the EPA effectively or expressly denied his request for fee waivers in 14 of 15 FOIA instances over this same time period. Horner's appeals of the EPA decisions to deny his fee waivers were rejected.

Further review, Horner said, established that "green" groups proved successful in getting their fees waived 92 percent of the time.

As Gabe notes, the EPA is kindly "considering" an investigation into this matter. Most transparent administration evah. More pressure, please, Congress!

3) EPA contractors are basically Gym, Tan, Laundrying in new, swanky rec rooms thanks to your tax money.

Aww, yeah:

In a huge Environmental Protection Agency warehouse in Landover, enterprising workers made sure that they had all the comforts of home. They created personal rec rooms with televisions, radios, chairs and couches. On the walls were photos, calendars and pinups. For entertainment, they had books, magazines and videos. If they got hungry, they could grab something from a refrigerator and pop it into a microwave.

The crown jewel of their hideaway — which stored EPA office furnishings — was a 30-by-45-foot athletic center, cobbled together from "surplus" EPA gym equipment and decked out with a music system provided via "other agency inventory items," according to a recently released inspector general's report.

All of it was carefully hidden from security cameras by partitions and piles of boxes set up by the workers, employees of Apex Logistics, the contractor that ran the warehouse until the EPA severed ties after learning of the situation last month.

4) The EPA leaked confidential information on farmers and cattle facilities to environmental groups. No bigs.

For your NOM-IRS analogy, this one's perfect:

According to a letter from a group of Senators to Acting EPA Administrator Bob Perciasepe, the EPA "released farm information for 80,000 livestock facilities in 30 states as the result of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from national environmental organizations. It is our understanding that the initial release of data contained personal information that was not required by the FOIA request for ten states including Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio and Utah. This release included names and personal addresses."

The Senators sent the letter Friday to express concern over the sensitivity of the data that was released to groups like Earth Justice, Pew Charitable Trust and Natural Resources Defense Council and to ask how the EPA plans to protect the data of farms and ranches that are also homes to families.

I'm in ur database, leakin to your political enemies.

Definition of Hypocrisy: Obama plays with toy gun

by Dr. Eowyn

Every day, some kid in a U.S. public government indoctrination school is punished for wholly harmless behavior that some Left-brainwashed teacher sees as "encouraging" gun violence, such as drawing a picture of a gun, or biting a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun, or making the sign of a gun (Bang!) with his hand.

Last February, Naomi McKinney, a 6-year-old kindergarten student, was expelled from the Alice Drive Elementary School in Sumter, SC, last February  for having a broken, clear plastic toy gun in her backpack.

Naomi McKinney

The POS is the most prominent proponent for gun control in America and, therefore, is indirectly responsible for whipping up this frenzy of "gun" phobia.

That's why it is the height of hypocrisy for him not only to have played with a huge toy assault gun with his daughters on Father's Day, but to have his minions in the White House tweet this picture of him wielding the gun:

Obama with toy gun, 6-16-2013

Typical Leftwing double-standard hypocrisy: "Do what I say, not what I do."

At a guess, the NYPD is going to be forced by the Obama Regime to stop all surveillance of Muslims, which has resulted in 16 averted Muslim terrorist plots against NYC. We already know that the NSA excludes all mosques from surveillance. If the NYPD's successful Counter-terrorism program is stopped, New Yorkers can expect to […]

Fellow infidels,

Isn't it sort of backwards that Muslims are not bothered AT ALL by beheading their fellow Muslims, gang-raping and then stoning their women to death, 'marrying' prepubescent Muslim girls, forcing Muslim girls to undergo excruciatingly painful clitorectomies, etc., but yet they can go ballistic over mere words or a stupid cartoon? Kitteh for mayor!

Morris the Cat running for mayor of Mexican town

NY Daily News: This mayoral hopeful in Mexico promises to eat, sleep most of the day and donate his leftover litter to fill potholes.

Morris, a black-and-white kitten with orange eyes, is running for mayor of  Xalapa in eastern Mexico with the campaign slogan "Tired of Voting for Rats?  Vote for a Cat." And he is attracting tens of thousands of politician-weary, two-legged supporters on social media.

"He sleeps almost all day and does nothing, and that fits the profile of a  politician," said 35-year-old office worker Sergio Camacho, who adopted the 10-month-old feline last year.

Put forth as candidate by Camacho and a group of friends after they became  disillusioned with the empty promises of politicians, Morris' candidacy has resonated across Mexico, where citizens frustrated with human candidates are nominating their pets and farm animals to run in July 7 elections being held in 14 states.

Also running for mayor are "Chon the Donkey" in the border city of Ciudad  Juarez, "Tina the Chicken" in Tepic, the capital of the Pacific coast state of  Nayarit, "Maya the Cat" in the city of Puebla and "Tintan the Dog" in Oaxaca  City, though their campaigns are not as well organized as that of Morris.

Politicians repeatedly rank at the bottom of polls about citizens' trust in  institutions. A survey last year by Mitofsky polling agency ranking Mexicans' trust in 15 institutions put politicians and government officials among the bottom five. Universities and the Catholic Church were the top two,  respectively.

morris

Morris' cuteness, the clever campaign and promises to donate money collected  from the sales of campaign stickers and T-shirts to an animal shelter has  attracted cat lovers, but Camacho said most of his supporters are citizens tired  of corrupt politicians and fraudulent elections.

"Morris has been a catalyst to show the discontent that exists in our society," Camacho said. "Our message from the beginning has been`if none of the  candidates represent you, vote for the cat' and it seems people are responding  to that."

Xalapa, a university city of 450,000 people, is the capital of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, where residents have in last two years been beleaguered by drug violence, corruption scandals and the killings of at least nine reporters and photojournalists.

During last year's presidential election, a video posted on social networks  showed a massive warehouse in Veracruz stuffed with election give-away  groceries. Authorities also seized $1.9 million in wads of cash found when  police decided to search passengers of a private plane arriving from Veracruz to  Toluca, the capital of the home state of now-President Enrique Pena Nieto.  Officials later said they had found no wrongdoing and the money was  returned.

Giovanna Mazzotti, a 48-year-old university professor from the city of  bright colonial buildings and steep streets, said she supports Morris' campaign and plans to go to a party for him being held Friday. The candidate is not  expected to attend.

"In this state there is no rule of law, there is no respect for human rights, there are no institutions," Mazzotti said. "It's great that this campaign is showing the fiction in our elections. Every three years politicians laugh at us, it's good to laugh at them a bit, too."

Morris has a website, a Twitter account and a Facebook page with more than  115,000 `likes,' that makes him more popular in social networks than the five  human mayoral contenders. Americo Zuniga, the candidate for the ruling party who  is leading in election polls, had 33,000 Facebook `likes' as of Friday.

His website has a collection of memes that picture Morris yawning while  describing his "ample legislative experience," an image that mirrors photographs  of lawmakers sleeping during congressional sessions.

Morris' campaign managers are asking supporters to write-in `Morris' or draw  a cat's face on the ballot to send a message to authorities, who are not taking  the cat's growing popularity lightly.

Members of the Electoral Institute of Veracruz this week called on voters not  to waste their vote on a cat. "We are asking for people to participate by voting for those citizens  registered on the ballots," electoral institute president Carolina Viveros told local media this week. "Everything else is part of expressions happening in  social media and I respect that, but you have to vote for the registered  candidates, please."

Morris also has international supporters. On Friday, the animal-welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of  Animals wrote Morris congratulating him for his campaign.

Stubbs, a cat that has been the honorary mayor for more than 15 years of the  sleepy Alaska town of Talkeetna, has shown support for Morris by posting his  fellow feline candidate's spot campaign on its Facebook page.

Heck, given the popularity of some of our politicians, I just might vote for a kitteh!
