OTTAWA -- Canada should be peeved by comments made by U.S. President Barack Obama on whether enough is being done to curb greenhouse gas emissions north of the border, says a former U.S. ambassador.

David Wilkins said that of the top five countries that supply oil to the United States, Canada is the only one with regulations to control carbon.

"I think that's a real insult to Canada," Wilkins said in an interview with Sun News.

"I can't see us saying that to China or to other countries about 'you've got to change your regulations in order for us to trade with you.'

"It's not good policy. It makes very little sense."

Wilkins was ambassador to Canada from 2005 until 2009.

Canada, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Venezuela are key suppliers of oil to the U.S., he said.

Wilkins was responding to Obama's remarks questioning the validity of the number of jobs the Keystone XL pipeline to the Texas Gulf Coast would create.

The president says 2,000 compared to the 20,000 pipeline builder TransCanada Corp. promises and the more than 40,000 his government announced this year.

Obama also suggested Canada could do more to lower emissions as he awaits a final State Department report this summer which many expect will mirror a draft report that said the $7.6 billion pipeline would have little impact on emissions because Alberta crude would get to market one way or another.

That claim is supported by a nearly four-fold increase in oil shipments south by rail since 2012.

Wilkins said he's also astonished at the length of time that has been devoted to approving Keystone XL, even joking World Wars have been won faster.

And he warned the Canada-U.S. relationship will suffer if Obama ignores the evidence and rejects the pipeline.

"We are each other's biggest trading partner. We are each other's best friend and we ought to treat each other that way. The biggest loser will be the relationship."

International Trade Minister Ed Fast echoed other ministers who said they are confident the pipeline will proceed on merit.

"We want to make sure that we do this as safe as possible," he said Tuesday. "I think some of the recent events in Quebec have driven home that pipelines are a safe way of transporting oil."

Fast was referring to the tragedy that befell Lac-Megantic when a runaway oil train devastated the Eastern Townships community.

If I were to use the phrase "When Truth Was Treason," you might think that I was referring to the cases of Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden. Your assumption, of course, would be entirely reasonable given that that's what they did they disclosed the truth about the U.S. national-security state's lies, crimes, and secret surveillance schemes, for which they have been labeled as criminals and traitors.

But actually the phrase is the title of a fascinating book about a group of teenagers in Hamburg, Germany, who disclosed the truth about the operations of their government during the midst of World War II and who were labeled criminal and traitors for having done so.

The group was led by a 16-year-old boy named Helmuth Hubener, who had achieved the same type of "breakthrough" that characterizes American libertarians today. Possessing an independent, analytical mind, he refused to defer to authority and to comply with what he considered to be wrongful laws enacted by the government. (Click here for a photograph of Hubener and an article about him.)

Among the many laws that governed the Nazi state was one that made it a grave criminal offense to reveal to the German people what was being broadcast by the BBC. In fact, it was a criminal offense to even listen to BBC broadcasts. The German people were expected to get their information about the war was going only from their own government officials, who could be trusted to tell them the truth as to the progress of the war.

Hubener decided that such laws were immoral and ridiculous and, therefore, declined to comply with them. He began secretly listening to BBC broadcasts and concluded that Hitler and his cohorts were lying to the German people about the progress of the war. They also began questioning the moral legitimacy of the Nazi regime itself.

So, Hubener began preparing fliers that disclosed the truth to the German people. He and his friends began surreptitiously distributing the fliers at various locations in Hamburg.

Make no mistake about it: Hubener and his friends knew the risk they were taking in revealing the truth to the German people. They fully understood that if they got caught, they would be condemned as criminals and traitors and that they would be facing long prison terms at best and a death sentence at worst.

It's not difficult to understand the reaction of German officials to Hubener's fliers. Consider, for example, the following excerpt from one of them:

German boys! Do you know the country without freedom, the country of terror and tyranny? Yes, you know it well, but are afraid to talk about it. They have intimidated you to such an extent that you don't dare talk for fear of reprisals. Yes you are right; it is Germany Hitler Germany! Through their unscrupulous terror tactics against young and old, men and women, they have succeeded in making you spineless puppets to do their bidding.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the book was the similarity of the mindsets of the Germans who criticized and condemned Hubener and those Americans who condemn Manning and Snowden. No, I'm not equating Nazi Germany and the United States. What I am equating is the mindsets of those Germans who condemned Hubener with the mindsets of those Americans who condemn Manning and Snowden. There really isn't any difference between the two mindsets.

German officials, and their supporters, took the position that the law was the law and, therefore, Hubener should have followed the law, whether he agreed with it or not. Releasing information that indicated that German officials were lying about the progress of the war or that questioned the policies and practices of the government, especially during war, were reprehensible acts, according to Nazi officials. Hubener needed to be punished severely, they said, in order to send a message that would discourage others from blowing the whistle on the German government by revealing the truth to the German people. Hubener was a traitor, they said, because he turned against the German government by revealing its lies and crimes to the German people.

Does that not describe precisely the mindset of those who criticize Manning and Snowden? Don't U.S. officials and their supporters condemn and vilify Manning and Snowden for revealing the truth about U.S. government operations to the American people? Don't they say that they are traitors who are helping America's enemies by disclosing the truth to the American people about the lies and crimes of the U.S. national-security state? Don't they say that the law is the law and, therefore, must be obeyed even when it's wrong? Don't they say that Manning and Snowden need to be punished severely in order to discourage others from doing the same thing? In their minds, doesn't the truth that Manning and Snowden revealed constitute treason?

Why was it so important to German officials to go after people like Hubener? The answer lies in the words of Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister:

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the TRUTH becomes the greatest ENEMY OF THE STATE.

Hubener and his friends were caught, arrested, prosecuted, and convicted. Interestingly, they were caught as a result of the Nazi regime's massive surveillance scheme on the German people. No, it wasn't a super-technological marvel, like the NSA's surveillance scheme on the American people, but it was extensive nonetheless. It relied on an informal army of good little German citizens those who deferred to authority whose job it was to report suspicious activity by other German citizens to the Gestapo.

One of these good little citizens noticed a member of the Hubener group engaged in suspicious activity. He reported it to the Gestapo, which quickly unraveled the entire scheme.

Two of Hubener's friends, aged 18 and 16, were sentenced to 4 and 5 years in jail. Hubener, as the leader of the group, received the death penalty. The boy was guillotined within a couple of months after the verdict. Shortly before they killed him, Hubener stated, "My Father in heaven knows that I have done nothing wrong. I know that God lives and He will be the proper judge of this matter."

Of course, Hubener and his friends weren't the only Germans who paid a high price for speaking the truth about the Nazi regime. Around a year later, the White Rose group, headed by siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, would be arrested, convicted, and sentenced for distributing leaflets exhorting Germans to oppose their own government, even in the middle of war. Like Hubener, they were considered criminals and traitors. (See my article, "The White Rose: A Lesson in Dissent.)

It is stories like these that inspire and provide courage to others. I can't help but wonder whether Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden were familiar with the stories of Helmuth Hubener and the White Rose when they decided to reveal the truth about the U.S. national-security state to the American people and the people of the world.

BLACKS PUMMEL WHITE CHILD ON BUS

'They're about to beat this boy to death over here'

A cell-phone video captures the 13-year-old boy's screams for help as he's pummeled with fists and kicked by three bigger, older youths who "ganged up" on him as he was about to get off at his bus stop.

The black teens beat the white sixth-grader for roughly a minute before opening the emergency-exit door and fleeing the bus.

As the relentless assault unfolds, the bus driver John Moody yells at the teens to leave the boy alone. He also asks dispatchers to send help.

"You gotta get somebody here quick, quick, quick, quick," he urged. "They're about to beat this boy to death over here."

Moody added, "Please get somebody here quick. There's still doing it. There's nothing I can do."

Moody, 64, said he was too afraid to physically intervene. And according to Lealman Intermediate School's policy, he is only required to call dispatch.

"The three boys just jumped on him and started pounding on him. And I did all I can," he told WFLA-TV. "I was looking. It was like I was in shock. I was petrified."

The attack took place July 9 in Pinellas County, Fla., but the horrific cell-phone video – and a bus surveillance video – came to light only recently.

Prosecutors say they have no grounds on which to charge the bus driver with a crime.

(Anyone notice the attempt to shift the blame away from the attackers, and onto the elderly bus driver who called for help? ~TD)

"It wasn't like he was looking out the window cleaning his fingernails or something like that," Chief Assistant State Attorney Bruce Bartlett told the TV station.

But police said Moody could have at least given first aid to the victim after the attackers fled through the vehicle's emergency-exit door.

"There was clearly an opportunity for him to intervene and or check on the welfare of the children or the child in this case and he didn't make any effort to do so," Chief Robert Vincent of Gulfport Police Department told WFLA-TV.

Police say the youths attacked the victim after he told officials at their drop-out prevention school that one of them had tried to sell him drugs.

The victim suffered two black eyes and a broken arm.

Joshua Reddin, Julian McKnight and Lloyd Khemradj, all 15-years-old, were arrested soon after bolting from the bus.

Left to right: Joshua Reddin, Julian McKnight, Lloyd Khemradj

All three assailants are charged with aggravated battery. Reddin is also charged with unarmed robbery for taking the victim's money after the beating.

Moody, who retired from his bus-driving job two weeks after the attack, said he's still haunted by it and has suffered sleepless nights.

"I wanted to help him so bad," he said. "I wanted to help him."

How'd that work out for Governor Boggs?   The term and the statement obviously was taken out of context.  The Mormans were polygamists, which was unacceptable to the People of Missouri in 1836.

One hundred fifty years ago,  General Lee would not set foot in a Church of house of worship to meet or conduct any war business, while on the other hand, his counterpart,  General Sherman saw nothing wrong with burning his way through the citizenry, raping, pillaging, plundering murdering, and using prisoners of war as human flak jackets.  By today's standards,  Sherman was a terrorist, yet he has been accorded "Hero" status and given the respect of history, while General Lee's land was confiscated and degraded, treated as a racist, and shunned from our Nation's annals,  when in fact he was far from racist, but instead a great Statesman, a religious man who beleived in State's rights and his beloved Virginia.

In 1838, Gov. Lilburn Boggs declared that Mormons had made war on the state of Missouri, and "must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state." In 1976 the state of Missouri resended the order.

The Greek historian Antiochus Strategos writes that captive Christians were gathered near Mamilla reservoir and the Jews offered to help them escape death if they "become Jews and deny Christ". The Christian captives refused, and the Jews in anger had purchased the Christians from Persians and massacred them on spot.

Persecution of Catholics mostly, before and at the beginning, of the Spanish Civil war (1936–1939), involved the murder of almost 7,000 priests and other clergy, as well as thousands of lay people, by sections of nearly all the leftist groups because of their faith.

According to the World Evangelical Alliance, over 200 million Christians are denied fundamental human rights solely because of their faith. Of the 100-200 million Christians under assault, the majority are persecuted in Muslim-dominated nations.

On 7 May 1099 the crusaders reached Jerusalem, which had been recaptured from the Seljuks by the Fatimids of Egypt only a year before. On 15 July, the crusaders were able to end the siege by breaking down sections of the walls and entering the city. Over the course of that afternoon, evening and next morning, the crusaders murdered almost every inhabitant of Jerusalem. Muslims, Jews, and even eastern Christians were all massacred. Although many Muslims sought shelter atop the Temple Mount inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the crusaders spared few lives. According to the anonymous Gesta Francorum, in what some believe to be one of the most valuable contemporary sources of the First Crusade, "...the slaughter was so great that our men waded in blood up to their ankles...."

don't complain about the way your enemy fights.

The book is called Yalkut Shaiylos u'Teshuvos. As the title indicates, it is a collection of questions and answers on halakhic topics. The questions were asked by young Skvere yeshiva students in New Square, New York. The answers are rabbinic.

The section translated below is titled, "Goyyim" and it explains the Skvere hasidic view of non-Jews, citing among other sources, the Skvere Rebbe himself.

The anti-gentile hatred is based on rabbinic sources. Those sources are heavily influenced by kabbalah and by hasidic thought.

A similar attitude toward non-Jews can be found in the Tanya, the so-called bible of Chabad hasidic thought written by the first rebbe of Chabad, Schneur Zalman of Liadi, and reprinted thousands of times by Chabad worldwide.

The translation was made by the noted filmmaker Menachem Daum, who sent it to me along with the scans of the book posted below and requested that I post it.

All remarks in square brackets [  ] are Daum's. All remarks in these brackets {  } are mine. All text within normal parenthesis (  ) are the book's author's.

Question:  Is it appropriate to not love, or to hate, a gentile?

Answer:  A Jew is intrinsically good.  A Jew is a part of God above.  Even if at times he strays it is not because he has become evil.  It is only that there is evil within him that he has to cleanse.

Re: Muslim Persecution of Christians: May, 2013

Nigeria is the most dangerous nation for Christians
---
not an American concern.

Raymond Ibrahim is author of the new book, Crucified Again: Exposing Islam's New War on Christians
---

According to historian R.M. Savory,

"The existence of Islam has always made the West profoundly uneasy. Islam was the only major world religion to be revealed after the rise of Christianity, and consequently it was, from the moment of the revelation of Islam in the seventh century A.D., viewed by Christendom as a direct threat and challenge to itself.[41]

On the theological and religious level, the reaction of the West was strong, sustained and, almost without exception, hostile. Hostility was based on fear, and fear had its roots in ignorance. Christendom feared Islam, and therefore misrepresented it. Christians were ignorant of Islam, at least in part, because Christendom, prompted by odium theologicum had no desire to understand or tolerate Islam.

More recently, Western support for the continued existence of the State of Israel has been declared part of a "war against Islam." Enver Masud, an Indian Muslim and author of the book The War on Islam states that while there are no Muslims in high-level policy making and media jobs in the United States, "Jewish Americans occupy nearly every single position relating to US Arab-Israeli policy."

In modern day, events alleged to be attacks on Islam include media portrayal of the religion and the War on Terrorism.[47] Statements portraying Islam as a destructive ideology have been made by Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Benny Hinn, V.S. Naipaul[48] and Ann Coulter following the 9/11 attack.[49] Franklin Graham, the son of famed American Christian evangelist Billy Graham, declared in November 2001 that "the God of Islam is not the same God. He's not the son of God of the Christian or Judeo-Christian faith. It's a different God and I believe it is a very evil and wicked religion." On September 16, 2001, George W. Bush referred to the war in Afghanistan as a crusade.

Muslim Persecution of Christians: May, 2013

by Raymond Ibrahim
Gatestone Institute

http://www.meforum.org/3571/muslim-persecution-of-christians-may-2013

The month of May continued to prove that Nigeria is the most dangerous nation for Christians—where more Christians have been killed last year than all around the Muslim world combined. In one instance, Boko Haram Muslim militants stormed the home of a Pentecostal pastor and secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, and opened fire on him, instantly murdering him.

Separately, other Boko Haram gunmen killed 14 Christians, including the cousin and two nephews of the Rev. Moses Thliza, head of a Christian organization dedicated to preventing AIDS and caring for AIDS patients and orphans: Said Thliza: "My cousin, Bulus [Paul] Buba, was dragged out at gunpoint from his house by the Boko Haram members. They collected his car keys, demanded money and asked him three times to renounce his Christian faith, and three times he declined to do so [prompting them to execute him]. The attackers met three guards on duty, killed two of them by cutting their necks with knives, and then proceeded to take the third guard, Amtagu Samiyu, at gunpoint to lead them to where the keys of the deputy governor's house is."

As for some Christians observing a wake two kilometers away, Boko Haram Muslims asked to know what was going on there, and when they learned that people were saying prayers for an elderly Christian woman who had died, they charged in and shot into the crowd. "The attackers went there and shot indiscriminately at the worshippers, killing eight Christians—two women and six elderly men," said Thliza. "In all, we buried 14 Christians. Some were injured and taken to the hospital."

Despite all this, when the Nigerian government tried militarily to confront and neutralize Boko Haram, the Obama administration criticized it, warning it not to violate the "human rights" of the Islamic terrorists.

Categorized by theme, the rest of May's roundup of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed by theme and in country alphabetical order, not necessarily according to severity:

Church Attacks

Bosnia: The Serbian Orthodox church of Saint Sava in Sarajevo, where Muslims make up approximately half of the population, was "desecrated" and six of its windows panes broken. The unidentified vandals wrote "Allah" in dark paint twice on the church wall. A month earlier, unidentified persons tried to set the church on fire.

Central African Republic: According to the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, since an Islamic rebel leader proclaimed himself president, the situation for Christians, has "deeply worsened." The organization warns against "the evil intentions for the programmed and planned desecration and destruction of religious Christian buildings, and in particular the Catholic and Protestant churches…. All over the country the Catholic Church has paid a high price." Several dioceses have been seriously damaged and plundered, and priests and nuns attacked (more information below, under "Dhimmitude.")

Egypt: Two Coptic Christian churches were attacked, one in Alexandria, the other in Upper Egypt. St. Mary in Alexandria was attacked by Molotov cocktails and bricks, causing the gate to burn and the stained glass windows to shatter. One-thousand Christians tried to defend the church against 20,000 Muslims screaming "Allahu Akbar" ["Allah is Greater"]. One Copt was killed and several injured. In the village of Menbal in Upper Egypt, after "Muslim youths" harassed Christian girls—including hurling bags of urine at them—and Coptic men came to their rescue, another Muslim mob stormed the village church of Prince Tadros el-Mashreki. They hurled stones and broke everything inside the church, including doors and windows. The mob then went along the streets looting and destroying all Coptic-owned businesses and pharmacies and torching cars. Any Copt met by the mob in the street was beaten.

Iran: Because it refused to stop using the national Persian language during its services—which makes the Gospel intelligible to all Iranian Muslims, some of whom converted—the Central Assemblies of God Church in Tehran was raided by security services during a prayer meeting; its pastor taken to an unknown location, and the church was searched and its books, documents and equipment seized. Security agents posted a sign stating that the church was now closed. One local source said, "They constantly threaten the church leaders and their families with imprisonment, unexplained accidents, kidnapping and even with execution. We cannot go on like this." A number of its members have already been killed and its activities greatly restricted over the last few years.

Libya: The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Benghazi was bombed. In the words of the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli, "They put a bomb at the entrance of the corridor leading to the courtyard where there is the door of the church. The church, therefore, was not touched directly, but the attack is not a positive sign. The Church in Libya is suffering. In Benghazi the Coptic Church was hit, its chaplain was killed and now the Catholic Church. As I reported on other occasions, in Cyrenaica different religious women's institutes have been forced to close their doors, in Tobruk, Derna, Beida, Barce, as well as in Benghazi. The nuns who were forced to leave, served the population with generosity."

Syria: A violent explosion destroyed the church and convent of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars in Deir Ezzor. According to Fr. Haddad of the region, "It was the only church in Deir Ezzor [that] so far still remained almost untouched." It is not clear how it was destroyed, but some say a car bomb was placed next to the church. Fr. Haddad lamented that, as in other regions, "there are no more Christians" left in Ezzor, due to "all this hate and desecration."

Tanzania: During a service to mark its official opening, a new church in a predominantly Christian suburb was bombed, killing at least five people and wounding some 60. According to a local source, "This was… a well-planned attack. Even before it, the threat was given and we still have many threats. Pray for us, and that God will overcome all these in Jesus' name." He added that, "radical camps in the country were teaching young Muslims that Christians must be killed or live as second-class citizens," or dhimmis. Among those arrested, four were Saudi Arabian nationals. The bombing follows the slaying of two church leaders in February, and the shooting in the face of a third on Christmas Day. In October, several church buildings were torched and vandalized.

Apostasy, Blasphemy, Proselytism

Egypt: Twenty-four-year-old Demiana Ebeid Abdelnour, a social studies teacher, was fired and arrested for comparing the late Coptic Pope Shenouda to Islam's prophet Muhammad, "as well as putting her hand on her neck or her stomach every time she mentioned [Islam's prophet] Muhammad," which was interpreted by some students under 10-years-old as disgust. She would be the last Coptic Christian victim to be arrested or imprisoned in a "defamation of Islam" spree that began under now ousted President Morsi. One Coptic activist wondered, "Why is defamation of religion a one-way street, only for the benefit of the Muslims, while Christianity is defamed every day?" He added that Sheikh Abu Islam, who tore and burned the Holy Bible, has not been detained.

Iran: Vahid Hakkani, a Christian prisoner in Shiraz, is suffering from internal digestive bleeding. Although doctors have diagnosed his condition as critical, and have recommended urgent surgery, prison officials have not allowed his transfer to any hospital. Earlier, Hakkani and other Christians were gathered for worship in a house-church when they were arrested "for participating in house-church services, evangelizing and promoting Christianity, having contact with foreign Christian ministries, propagating against the regime and disturbing national security."

Kashmir: Two Christians accused of carrying out "acts of proselytism," for distributing pamphlets and publications with biblical passages to some young Muslims, were savagely beaten by a mob, and later arrested by police, "who rescued them from a secure lynching." Separately, the "United Jihad Council" said that Christian missionaries in Kashmir are "highly reprehensible" and have a "hidden agenda [to] exploit the poor and the needy, offering them economic aid to convert them to Christianity," adding that "Islam is the religion of peace and harmony, and that protects minorities. However, anti-Islam activities [evangelization] cannot be tolerated." The United Jihad Council accordingly calls on all Christian missionaries "immediately to leave the valley of Kashmir," warning, "If not, they will suffer the consequences."

Kazakhstan: Despite the nation's president recently boasting that, "Kazakhstan is an example to the world of equal rights and freedoms for all citizens" and that, "religious freedom is fully secured" in the country, the Barnabas Fund states that the government "has instructed people to report any individuals who speak about their faith with others in public to the police," as "talking about one's faith with others constitutes missionary activity, which requires personal registration… Compulsory prior censorship of all printed and imported religious literature is another way in which the state controls Christian activity. Confiscation of religious books appears to be increasing, with Christians amongst those most likely to be targeted."

Morocco: A fatwa by the government's top Islam authority, partially based on the teachings of Islam's prophet Muhammad, calls for the execution of those Muslims who leave Islam, causing many Christian converts to live in fear. Lamented one Christian: "The fatwa showed us that our country is still living in the old centuries—no freedom, no democracy. Unfortunately, we feel that we aren't protected. We can be arrested or now even killed any time and everywhere. The majority of the Christian Moroccan leaders have the same feeling. We are more followed now by the secret police than before. Only the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ gives us courage and peace."

Saudi Arabia: A Christian Lebanese man, accused of helping a Saudi women convert to Christianity, was sentenced to six years in prison and 300 lashes. Even so, the father of the woman claims the punishment is not sufficient. The daughter was also sentenced to six years and 300 lashes, causing her to flee, reportedly to Sweden, where authorities are trying to find her and extradite her back to the Arabian peninsula. Another man, a Saudi national who reportedly forged a travel document to help the woman flee, was sentenced to two years in jail and 200 lashes.

Dhimmitude

[General Abuse of Non-Muslims as Third-Class "Citizens," or Dhimmis]

Central African Republic: Christians are being terrorized, killed, and plundered by Islamic militants, who seized control of the country in March, even as international media and government ignore the crisis. In what one pastor is calling "a reign of terror," Muslims are tying up, beating and forcing Christians to pay money to save their lives. Many have been killed or wounded. The Barnabas Fund states that "rebels have a hit list of pastors and other Christian workers, and that places of worship are being attacked. Christian property is being looted. In one incident towards the end of last month, Seleka [Islamic] troops seized all the collection money given at a gathering of church leaders. Many Christians have fled their homes to the countryside and are too fearful to return. More than 200,000 people are internally displaced, while 49,000 refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries." On 10 May, Human Rights Watch released a report citing "grave violations" committed by the Seleka rebels against civilians, including pillage, summary executions, rape and torture. One pastor of a besieged church was shot dead when he went out holding a Bible aloft as a sign of peace.

Egypt: Mohamed Abu Samra, secretary-general of the Islamic Jihad Party, asserted that "it is permissible to kill some Christians today," justifying it by adding "Those who came out with weapons, their blood is allowed for us [to spill], as a fighter is not considered dhimmi." In Islamic law, a dhimmi is a non-Muslim who is permitted to exist provided he pays monetary tribute and lives as a submissive, lowly subject, according to Koran 9:29. Those Coptic Christian activists who vocally called for the removal of former Islamist president Morsi were not doing that, thereby becoming fair game for killing.

Indonesia: After an earlier Christmas Eve attack, during which members of Filadelfia Batak Christian Protestant Church were pelted with rotten eggs, dung and plastic bags full of urine, as the pastor was attempting to leave the scene with his wife, Abdul Aziz, the leader of the mob who had earlier threatened to kill him, moved to attack him. Because the pastor stopped the Muslim agitator's blow with his hand to protect his wife and himself, he is now facing assault charges. Islamic law, based on the "Conditions of Omar," forbids Christians from raising their hands to Muslims, even in self-defense. The church has been meeting outside and in homes since its building was sealed off by authorities to appease Islamists in 2010—despite its having met all conditions for a building permit, as well as a Supreme Court ruling that a permit should be granted.

Pakistan: Over the course of five days, a Muslim mob tortured Javaid Anjum, a Christian teenaged student to death, because he dared drink water from the tap of an Islamic seminary while on a long journey to visit his grandfather. When Muslims discovered he was Christian, they forced him into the seminary, where they tried to force him to renounce Christianity and convert to Islam. When he refused, for five days, Muslim seminary students electrocuted him, broke his arm, and pulled out his fingernails. The electric shocks caused his kidneys to fail and he eventually died.

About this Series

Because the persecution of Christians in the Islamic world is on its way to reaching pandemic proportions, "Muslim Persecution of Christians" was developed to collate some—by no means all—of the instances of persecution that surface each month. It serves two purposes:

1) To document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, Muslim persecution of Christians.

2) To show that such persecution is not "random," but systematic and interrelated—that it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Sharia.

Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam; apostasy and blasphemy laws that criminalize and punish with death those who "offend" Islam; theft and plunder in lieu of jizya (financial tribute expected from non-Muslims); overall expectations for Christians to behave like dhimmis, or second-class, "tolerated" citizens; and simple violence and murder. Sometimes it is a combination.

Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and locales—from Morocco in the West, to India in the East, and throughout the West wherever there are Muslims—it should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islam—whether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of it.

Re: Empire State Building will shine green for Islam, again

why it is that we tiptoe around a religion that promotes the most murderous mayhem on the planet
---
nobody asked you to tiptoe.
and nobody has to tell you the mayhem that the US has promoted.

Our dependency on oil from countries that are either politically unstable or at odds with the U.S. subjects the American economy to occasional supply disruptions, price hikes, and loss of wealth, which, according to a study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy, have cost us more than $7 trillion present value dollars over the last 30 years. That is more than the cumulative cost of all of the wars fought by the U.S. since the Revolutionary War. The transfer of wealth to oil-producing countries - $1.16 trillion over the past thirty years - significantly increased our trade deficit. The Department of Energy estimates that each $1 billion of trade deficit costs America 27,000 jobs. Oil imports account for almost one-third of the total U.S. deficit and, hence, are a major contributor to unemployment.

The cost of securing our access to Middle East oil - deploying U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf, patrolling its water and supplying military assistance to Middle East countries - is estimated at $50 billion per year, which adds additional dimes to each gallon of gasoline we purchase

Political instability in the region breeds wars and embroils the U.S. in costly military actions. The 1990-91 Gulf War broke out as a result of an oil dispute between Iraq and Kuwait. The cost to the international community reached almost $80 billion. The cost of the 2003 Iraq war and the following occupation of the country is estimated at $200 billion.

According to the National Defense Council Foundation, the economic penalties of America's oil dependence total $297.2 to $304.9 billion annually. If reflected at the gasoline pump, these "hidden costs" would raise the price of a gallon of gasoline to over $5.28. A fill-up would be over $105.
To ensure access to the oil that fuels our economy, the U.S. is forced to maintain continuous presence in the Middle East. This presence has been a rallying cry for anti-Americanism and Islamic fundamentalism.

Fatwas (religious rulings) issued by Al-Qaeda in 1996 ("Declaration of War against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places" and in 1998 ("Declaration of the World Islamic Front for Jihad against the Jews and the Crusaders") emphasized the presence of U.S. soldiers in Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam's two holiest places. It was claimed that this was the greatest transgression against Muslims and that U.S. support of local regimes was unacceptable. Hence, the September 11 attacks were motivated by Al-Qaeda's desire to drive the "infidel armies" out of the oil-rich Persian Gulf.

World competition for dwindling oil reserves will force the U.S. to increase its footprint in the region while oil generated wealth would continue to provide extremists the capital to market and implement their ideas worldwide. The unavoidable result is even more terrorism and instability. So when it comes down to the question of whether we can actually afford to shift away from petroleum-based energy system one should remember that the combined impact of wars, terrorism and environmental degradation is likely to send the price of oil right through the ceiling over the next two decades. Alternatively, the cost of emerging technologies is likely to decrease over time, as mass production and commercialization takes place.

Furthermore, if history is our guide, we can see that every industrial and technological revolution in history inspired an economic boom. Building an infrastructure for next-generation energies would generate millions of jobs around the world, and revolutionize the automobile industry as well as other industries.
Researching, developing, and introducing new transportation technologies that are cleaner, safer, and less economically destructive should, therefore, be our top national security and economic priority.
