To: KeithInTampa@gmail.com

KeithInTampa, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray just vetoed the Large Retailer Accountability Act, which would have forced big box retailers, like Walmart, to pay D.C. workers a living wage. Please join with Daily Kos and Working America as we urge the City Council to override this veto. Click here to sign.

Retail giant Walmart, looking to open up to six stores in DC, led an intense lobbying campaign against the bill. Mayor Gray is parroting Walmart's claims, even calling this living wage bill a "job-killer," but the reality is that Walmart is the job-killer and DC's workers deserve better than poverty wages. The bill would require employers to pay a wage of $12.50 an hour—a drop in the bucket compared to the billion dollar balance sheets of retailers included in this bill.

On Tuesday, September 17, D.C. City Council has the opportunity to override the mayor's veto. To do so, one city council member who originally voted against the LRAA will need to find the courage to stand up to Walmart and change his or her vote to join the eight council members who voted for the LRAA.

Please join with Daily Kos and Working America by signing the petition urging D.C. City Council members Tommy Wells, Muriel Bowser, Mary Cheh, David Catana, and Yvette Alexander to override Mayor Gray's veto and pass the Large Retailer Accountability Act. Big Box retailers like Walmart can afford to and should pay living wages to their workers everywhere.

Keep fighting,
Laura Clawson, Daily Kos

P.S. Please help keep Daily Kos strong by chipping in $3.

Re: [New post] Governor Crispy Creme is more concerned with Muslim civil libe...

You need to understand and that you can not paint the world with a broad brush, I am personally offended when people use the term "muzzie" because there are a variety of Muslim people out there and in my family there are Sufi Muslims by marriage ... the assholes that we are fighting are a certain aspect of the Muslim world and unfortunately they are the assholes with a voice on the world stage ... just like every religion has extremists, you need to know some are not that extreme!!! The family that I have are Americans and despise the horros done by others in the name of Islam!!!

Re: [New post] Governor Crispy Creme is more concerned with Muslim civil liberties than he is with the safety of Americans

I do not see him as a far left extremist ... perhaps if you lived here ad saw how far right he is based on the insanely left society we have ... extreme pithy statements are always fun, but reality is always a different thing when you are in the same state ... please educate me how Christie is a far left person when 99% of the left here in NJ fear him ... could it be that he is neither left nor right, but pragmatic and will do whatever needs to be done for New Jersey!!! Like I said, he's not perfect on any level, but he pisses off the NJEA and the other unions here, so he's cool to me ... don't forget NJ has over 585 school districts and that has multiple levels of administration paid at a level that i will never achieve, but my taxes pay for them!!! Christie has been at odds with the teacher's union and has fought ot change the system, but it is difficult because the same people keep getting into our state government ... in other words the assholes who ruined my state have to vote to undo their stupidity ... when has that ever happened???

Re: [New post] Governor Crispy Creme is more concerned with Muslim civil libe...

".......not everyone thinks all muzzies are terrorists" the politicians in Washington believe they are "all  peace loving  as   they   behead oppents,  kill  their    own   children and use chemical warfare on their own citizens......oh, yes they are certainly a peace loving people who need never speak out against these outrages that they committ and when you are quiet on an issue it means you concurr. They film their beheadings and the one from yesterday showed an Uncle instructing his 13 year old nephew in the art and we see the kid strike the muzzie victim with a knife to begin the beheading. Oh, yes, not all the muzzies are terrorists but if you are a muzzie and do not speak out then you are as guilty as the actual perpetrators....these barbaric beasts.....

Fwd: Unions Want Taxpayers to Subsidize Their Healthcare

Unions Want Taxpayers to Subsidize Their Healthcare

The unions want us to pay for their healthcare.

"The AFL-CIO approved a resolution saying that President Obama's health care overhaul will drive up the costs of union-sponsored health plans to the point that workers and employers are forced to abandon them."

I'm suspicious of any union attack of a Democrat President. The unions can't afford politically to have an antiunion president and congress in power. They will always vote for the Democrat. "The federation said that labor unions still support the Affordable Care Act's overall goals of reducing health costs and bringing coverage to all Americans, but added that the law is being implemented in a way that is 'highly disruptive' to union health care plans."

So what do the unions want? They want taxpayers to fund in what's going to be an increase in healthcare costs under ObamaCare:

"Union officials are seeking rule changes that would make their low-income workers eligible for the same types of federal subsidies they could get in the exchanges. They have also suggested rules that would treat their multi-employer plans as qualified exchange plans under the new law."

The federal government doesn't have any money to subsidize anything. That money has to come from tax payers.

We shouldn't be surprised at any of this since Congress is doing the same thing for its members and their employees. All sorts of exceptions have been carved out for friends of the President.

"U.S. lawmakers and their staffs will continue to receive a federal contribution toward the health insurance that they must purchase through soon-to-open exchanges created by President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law.

The decision by the Office of Personnel Management, with Obama's blessing, will prevent the largely unintended loss of healthcare benefits for 535 members of the Senate and House of Representatives and thousands of Capitol Hill staff."

We're already paying their salaries, so now we have to subsidize their rising healthcare costs. How convenient to be a government employee.

Fwd: Black Thugs Who Brutally Murdered WWII Vet Plead Not Guilty

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2419785/Delbert-Belton-murder-Teen-boys-accused-beating-WWII-veteran-death-plead-guilty.html

Teen boys accused of brutally beating a WWII veteran to death with flashlights both plead not guilty

  • Boys' fingerprints were found in vehicle where 88-year-old's body was discovered
  • Demetrius Glenn and Kenan Adams-Kinard, both 16, will each stand trial in November
  • Police believe fatal attack was a botched robbery
  • Victim Delbert 'Shorty' Belton given funeral with full military honors

The two Spokane, Washington 16-year-old boys accused of brutally beating to death an 88-year-old World War II veteran last month have each entered not guilty pleas.

This despite fingerprint evidence on Delbert Belton's car that places both Demetruis Glenn and Kenan Adams-Kinard at the scene of the crime, where the elderly man was found dead and wedged between the two front seats.

The boys will stand trial separately in November and both will be tried as adults in this case that has sparked nationwide outrage.

Suspects: Demetrius Glenn, left, and Kenan Adams Kinard, right, have pleaded not guilty to beating a war veteran to death with flashlights

The teens said little during their separate appearances Thursday before Spokane County Superior Court Judge James Triplet.

They are accused of beating Delbert 'Shorty' Belton to death with flashlights in his car outside an Eagles Lodge in Spokane August 22.

Dark past: Adams-kinard was convicted of third-degree theft and fourth-degree assault in June. He's now charged with murder along with Glenn

Investigators allegedly found Glenn's prints on the outside of the car and the inside of the passenger door behind the driver's seat, according to Fox News.

Prints said to belong to Adams-Kinard were found on the outside of the driver's door and inside of the back passenger door, the affidavit said.

The teenagers face charges of first-degree murder and two charges of first-degree robbery. They could face life in prison if convicted.

Belton's body was found wedged between the front bucket seats, with his lower body folded into the back seat.

A letter found at the home where Adams-Kinard was arrested said they punched Belton three times before taking his wallet and drugs from his pockets, authorities said.

The letter indicated Adams-Kinard had called Belton and arranged to buy crack cocaine. However, police have said there was no evidence that Belton was a drug dealer.

Glenn, who turned himself in, was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, and his trial was set for November 9.

Adams-Kinard, who is suspected of hiding from police after the slaying, is jailed on $3 million bail. His trial is set for November 4.

Adams-Kinard and Demetrius Glenn both have previous convictions for assault and were caught on security cameras at the time of the killing.

Glenn gave himself up immediately to the police, but Adams-Kinard went on the run for four days and allegedly told friends during his time in hiding that the beating occurred because of a drug deal gone wrong.

Detained: Demetrius Glenn, left, confers with attorney Christian Phelps. He is charged with first degree murder and first degree robbery.

High price: Here, Glenn is led away by an officer. He will be tried as an adult because of the severity of the attack, as will Adams-Kinard. They have both pleaded not guilty

The letter said that after purchasing a 'zip of crack cocaine from Shorty,' the teens 'proceeded to sock him'.

'I took his wallet and another ounce of crack from his pockets,' the letter said, according to the court document. 'He was unconscious so I made sure he was still breathing, and then I took off.'

Police have said that they seriously doubt Adams-Kinard's story and spokesman, Monique Cotton said in a statement: 'We have no evidence to support that.'

Even Glenn's lawyer, Christian Phelps, told NBC News that he was skeptical and said, 'It doesn't seem plausible to me. I wouldn't put any stock in it at this point.'

Most wanted: Police say Adams-Kinard was arrested after a four day man-hunt

Fighter: Delbert Belton, a World War II hero, left, is believed to have tried to fight off his attackers

Surrender: Glenn turned himself in to police custody through his lawyer

However, Phelps also pointed out that, 'there are no eyewitnesses and no forensic evidence that links either of the kids to the crime.'

Adams-Kinard and Glenn are accused of battering the war hero to death with flashlights after he fought back during a robbery and, according to Belton's daughter-in-law: 'They just kept hitting and hitting him.'

'He was an 88-year-old man,' Barbara Belton told NBC News. 'Even if they wanted his money and he didn't want to give it to them, they didn't need to do that. They did a horrendous thing and they need to pay the consequences.'

Belton was born in Sunnyside and raised in Spokane. He got his nickname as an adult for being just over 5 feet tall.

When he was buried last week hundreds gathered at Greenwood Memorial Terrace on August 30 to bid farewell to Mr Belton, a man whose courage defined him at all stages of his life.

Uniformed soldiers joined the mourners and the Rev Homer Todd told how Mr Belton had fought bravely and was shot in the leg in the Battle of Okinawa only to be senselessly murdered.

After the war, he spent 33 years working for Kaiser Aluminum before retiring in 1982.

According to NBC, at the funeral he was described 'as a man who was short of stature but full of life and generosity, a tinkerer who loved souping up cars in his project-cluttered garage, and an "agile" dancer who needed no coaxing to get out on the floor.'

Rev Todd said: 'There are a lot of gals that will miss having a partner at those events. He was short, but full of vim and vinegar.'

Fallen soldier: With hundreds in attendance, Spokane veteran Delbert Belton was buried with full military honors during a public service

Police escort: Members of the Spokane Police Motor Unit escort the family of Delbert Belton to the graveside

However, Phelps also pointed out that, 'there are no eyewitnesses and no forensic evidence that links either of the kids to the crime.'

Mr Belton was found wedged between the two front seats of his car and was battered so badly he sustained brain damage and had lost too much blood to survive the violent attack.

Adams-Kinard and Glenn are accused of battering the war hero to death with flashlights after he fought back during a robbery and, according to Mr Belton's daughter-in-law: 'They just kept hitting and hitting him.'

'He was an 88-year-old man,' Barbara Belton told NBC News. 'Even if they wanted his money and he didn't want to give it to them, they didn't need to do that. They did a horrendous thing and they need to pay the consequences.'

Fond farewell: Pallbearers remove Delbert Belton's casket from a hearse during the graveside service
