Fwd: Phone calls from home for Steve Lonegan

--------

Please enable images in your email program - - Thank You!

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for volunteering to make phone calls from home!  I can get you set up to call likely Republican voters.

We have two systems available to you.  The first is the web-based system.  With this system, the script is online and you enter the person's responses directly on the website.

The second is the phones-only system.  With this system, I send you a script and the responses are entered using your phone's keypad.

Do you have a preference between the two?  Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Re: Are U.S. Soldiers Really This Dumb?

Kieth. Fallacy is the present past perfect tense of fellatio.

Are U.S. Soldiers Really This Dumb?
By Laurence M. Vance
October 2, 2013

A U.S. soldier takes issue with a "false and cowardly article spreading foolish nonsense" that I wrote a few years ago.

I call him a solider because he describes himself in these terms: "I have been on 3 deployments, am a Reservist, been on Active duty before."

The unnamed article of mine he describes as: "Your 2009 article on Christian Man Why they should NOT join the military."

His comments are in a word, dumb; and in two words, really dumb.

Yet, the soldier's comments surprised me. Most of the time that I receive dumb, rambling, grammatically challenged comments like his it is not from someone in the military. In spite of all the negative things I write about the military, most of the e-mails I receive from veterans and active-duty military personnel are favorable to my anti-war, anti-empire viewpoint. And especially from those men who were drafted and/or duped into going to Vietnam. It is usually armchair warriors, red-state fascists, warvangelicals, reich-wing nationalists, bloodthirsty conservatives, war-crazed Republicans, and God and country Christian bumpkins who have never been in the military themselves that write me the dumb, rambling, grammatically challenged e-mails, many of which are rambling, a number of which are filthy, many of which are incoherent, some of which are vile, and a few of which threaten to do me bodily harm. This soldier who just wrote to me is an embarrassment to everyone in the military. If these are the kind of people that are supposedly defending our freedoms, then we are in trouble.

I have selected seven of this soldier's statements for comment because, with one exception, they express opinionserroneous and dangerous opinions that reek of rotten baloneythat still linger in some circles even after the debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan. I will not subject this solider to ridicule that would certainly overflow his inbox if I gave out his name and e-mail address.

Here are the seven items (please excuse his grammar):

1. You know Mr. Vance it is examples such as your's that prove time in and again WHY the service of our brave man and women that do wear that uniform and serve our country for you to have the very freedom to spew the ridiculous, mis-informed, downright false, bigoted, anti-military/anti-american rhetoric.
2. SO what do you propose? Allow terrorists and extremists to fly planes into building and send them a fruit and cheese basket with a THANK YOU card?? Sure that will work out just fine.
3. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE my friend, it is bought and paid for with the blood of brave women and men that die for it and as for the coward that you quoted that he did not think for himself, that won the medal of honor that is either something he/you made up or he is a coward.
4. Don't be cowardly and rattle off about something you know nothing about first-hand because you have not served. If you TALK THE TALK you should have WALKED THE WALK to have first hand knowledge not just "cherry-picking" as you so choose to do.

5. If everyone had your opinion during World War II we would be speaking German right now!!!
6. I serve so you have the right to even say what you have as many others that have served and bravely fought for our very FREEDOMS.
7. My Bible does not say God will condemn them for killing if they are in a War.

And here are my brief comments.

1. U.S. military personnel are not brave and neither do they serve the country. Yes, I know that sounds shocking, disrespectable, and ungrateful, but I stand by every word. Members of the military may serve the government, they may serve the president, they may serve themselves, but they certainly don't serve the country. How does traveling thousands of miles away and fighting against people that were no threat to the United States and never harmed an American until his country was invaded and occupied serve the country? And how can anything done in an unjust and immoral war be considered an act of bravery? We don't call members of the Mafia brave for protecting those in their own "family" while they murder members of other "families."

2. What do I propose? How about a foreign policy of peace, neutrality, and nonintervention so terrorists and extremists don't want to fly planes into buildings? How about trading fruit and cheese baskets with them instead of meddling in their countries? That would certainly cut down on blowback. Fruit, cheese baskets, and thank you cards would have been just fine compared to how the debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan have worked out. Why don't you ask the widows and orphans of U.S. servicemen if they had rather that we sent fruit, cheese baskets, and thank you cards instead of launch two senseless wars that unnecessarily killed their husbands and fathers?

3. The "coward" that I "made up" was Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler (1881-1940). The one who at the time of his death was the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. The one who received the Medal of Honor twice. The one who wrote War Is a Racket. The one who proposed an " Amendment for Peace." The namesake of the USS Butler. The namesake of Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler. Some coward.

4. Without fail, I get this every time I write something about war or the military. The idea is that I couldn't possibly know anything about the military because I have never "served." Thank God I have never been in the military. I have never destroyed a country's industry and infrastructure that was no threat to the United States, fought an unjust war of aggression, or forty-five other things that I mentioned in my article "No, I Have Never Been in the Military."

5. This is one of the lamest justifications for the U.S. military and its unjust wars that has ever been uttered. First of all, what happened in World War II has absolutely no bearing on whether Americans should join the military now. As I have pointed out, since World War II, the U.S. military has functioned as the president's personal attack force ready to obey his latest command to bomb, invade, occupy, and otherwise bring death and destruction to any country he deems necessary. And second, this soldier would have us believe, first of all, that Germany, which couldn't cross the English Channel and conquer England, could have crossed the Atlantic Ocean and conquered America; and second, that Germany, which conquered France and didn't force the French to speak German, would have conquered America and forced Americans to speak German. It was our ally in World War IIRussia under the murderous Stalinthat is known in history for trying to make the people it conquered speak another language.

6. No one is serving in the military to protect my right to say what I have. No one in the military fought in Iraq or Afghanistan for "our very freedoms." The latter presupposes that there are countries in the world that are trying to take away our freedoms. What freedoms might that be? It is the U.S. government that has been steadily eroding our freedoms since the ink on the Constitution was dry. It is the U.S. government that we need to be concerned about, not some foreign "enemy." The former presupposes, not only that there are people in the world who want to infringe upon my right to say what I have, but also that there are people in the world who even care enough about what I say to try to stop me from saying it. Again, it is the U.S. government that we need to be concerned about. After all, it is the U.S. government that is listening to and reading everything that Americans say and write. There is no bigger lie ever uttered than "the troops are defending our freedoms." The troops are standing by while our freedoms are being taken away. Don't take my word for it. Listen to VMI grad and former Army reservist Jacob Hornberger in " The Troops Don't Defend Our Freedoms" and " An Open Letter to the Troops: You're Not Defending Our Freedoms."

7. This is a dangerous statement if not qualified in some way. It effectively means that in war anything goes, and anything goes in war. But if this is a true statement then Japanese, German, and Italian troops that killed Americans during World War II will suffer no condemnation from God. Therefore, who are we to condemn them? They were just following orders when they killed Americans. Why don't we posthumously give them medals for bravery? Why don't we build memorials to them? They are, after all, heroes. And if killing gets a free pass, then what about lesser crimes like rape, mutilation, and torture? How could rapists, mutilators, and torturers possible be condemned for doing something less severe than taking life? Unless, of course, this soldier believes that this lack of condemnation only applies to American soldiers.

I did not write all of this in reply to my soldier critic. My reply was simply this: "I hope you are planning to go to Syria and kill for the military you love so much." I thought that would be the end of our exchange.

I was wrong:

You cowardly little twit, your foolishness shows you have no spine whatsoever. Our military keeps fools that babble like you safe, you unappreciative fool. I think you see what has happened in Syria, your opinion is we should simply sit idly by and allow people to be massacred. You are far more twisted than what I first thought possible. So what were we supposed to do when the British were here? Cower and let them take over? Silly little man.

This was followed by two more mocking e-mails.

I guess this soldier thinks that if you repeat the lie enough times that the military keeps us safe so we can do thus and so, then it will miraculously become true. And as for Syria, people have been massacred there for the last two years. Why all of a sudden now should the United States intervene? Why is it that a few hundred or a few thousand killed by gas is considered so much worse than 100,000 people killed by bullets? This soldier's statement about the British being here is a first for me: justifying current U.S. foreign military interventions because Americans fought the British in the Revolutionary War.

Are U.S. soldiers really this dumb? Let's hope not. Soldiers this dumb are dangerous. They are the ones who will gladly make widows and orphans on demand for the statein the name of fighting terrorism and defending our freedoms, of course. Let's hope they are not as dangerous as they are dumb.

On The 100th Anniversary of the Income Tax

On The 100th Anniversary of the Income Tax
By Mises Updates
Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Woodrow Wilson signed the Income Tax into law one hundred years ago today. As direct taxation of Americans was prohibited by the Constitution, a constitutional amendment was necessary before what would become the Revenue Act of 1913 could be legally imposed. The income tax, and the enabling amendment, were sold to the voters as necessary for a tax on rich people that would mean lower taxes and cheaper goods (due to lowered tariffs) for everyone else. Only one percent of the population was subject to the tax then, and the tax rate was one percent.  The voters need not worry, they were told, because regular people would never ever pay the income tax.

Fwd: Where do we go from here?

-------

Dear Fellow American,

Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and the Democrats have chosen to shut down the federal government in an effort to protect the train-wreck that is Obamacare and force it on the American people.

My colleagues and I have offered these liberals numerous opportunities to fund the government for the coming year, and they have flat-out rejected each one. They know that without tying Obamacare to other critical funding it could never be funded.

I have long said that if Obamacare cannot stand on its own it should NOT stand at all.

Unfortunately, the Democrats have an obstinate, arrogant commitment to this debacle that is indicative of all that is wrong with Washington.

I applaud what the House of Representatives has done in sending over specific bills to fund Veterans' services, national parks, the National Guard and Reserves and research for lifesaving cures.

These government funding initiatives from the House came as a result of leaders listening to the people and then developing a strategy to carryout the will of "We the People."

And that's why I'm writing to ask for your help today. I want to hear your voice and raise your values in Washington.

Please take two minutes to complete my 2013 Next Steps Survey, and let me know what you want to see from your elected officials as we continue the fight to fund government and protect Americans from the negative impact of Obamacare.

What we do in the next few days is crucial to our strategic efforts to fund the federal government and defund Obamacare. Now that we have entered a Democrat-driven government shutdown, the stakes have never been higher.

President Obama is turning up the heat on members of the House and the Senate.

Democrats and the administration are counting on Republicans withering and waving the white flag of surrender to their takeover of our economy and healthcare system.

Personally, I'm not ready to give in easily, and I don't think the American people are either.

But I want to be sure.

That's why I need you to take my survey right now to help me affirm and validate what the American people want Congressional Conservatives to do next in this critical fight.

Should we capitulate to Harry Reid? Should we cower in the corner and give up? Should we simply surrender and give in to the big government "establishment?"

OR... Should we continue the fight to defund this unaffordable, unsustainable and unfair law? Should we stand up, speak out and stay strong for the American people and the American way of life?

These are the questions I'm debating with my colleagues, and I want to hear your opinion too.

Please, click here right now to take your survey. It will only take two minutes.

Everyone knows that Obamacare is a job-killing, economy-crashing disaster.

We have now entered the Democrats' government shutdown. Many are asking, "What do we do next?"

That's why I need you to take my survey today. I need to know if you're still standing with me against Obamacare. I need to know that you won't give in - especially at this stage! We have come too far and fought too hard to cave in now.

Please help me chart our course in the next phase of this battle.

Please, take this important survey right away.

Fwd: When The Arab Spring Died

When The Arab Spring Died

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On October 3, 2013

The Arab Spring was born in Tunisia. It died in Tunisia. Its funeral was attended by the same violent flag-waving protests as its birth.

The ruling Islamist Ennahda party has agreed to step down. Ennahda's move came after months of violent clashes and even murders. The Islamists had held out against the protesters, swapping out governments, but Morsi's example frightened them into backing away from a final confrontation for fear that their movement might suffer the same punitive outlawing as Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt and Tunisia were the two great victories of the Arab Spring. Now both of them have been undone.

The picture doesn't look any brighter for the Islamists elsewhere. The Muslim Brotherhood in Morocco faces rising protests. The Libyan Muslim Brotherhood bit off more than it could chew with its attempted coup and risks plunging the country into a civil war with no NATO warplanes to bail its fighters out.

The Muslim Brotherhood's campaign to capture Syria is collapsing as its Free Syrian Army fighters lose to the more suicidal Jihadists of Al Qaeda and the superior firepower of the Syrian military. Its only hope in lay in Western military intervention and that hope died with Cameron's parliamentary defeat in the UK and Putin's outmaneuvering of Obama.

In Syria and in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood, with its army of infiltrators and foreign agents, had bet everything on Western support. But Obama couldn't save Morsi and it doesn't look like he will be able to save the Free Syrian Army. The Brotherhood's decades long effort to build influence in the West may have proven to be worthless, helping them topple weak regimes, but unable to keep them in power.

Obama was at once their greatest gift and their greatest curse. He gave the Islamists an American leader who was overtly sympathetic to their cause, but who was also too weak to protect them. Obama may have rolled over for the Muslim Brotherhood, but he also rolled over for Russia and Saudi Arabia. And when the dust settled, so did the hopes of the followers of Qutb.

The Arab Spring was designed to move the Muslim Brotherhood into power. Now it's dead and an identical combination of factors; a sympathetic American leader, global economic depression, regional turmoil, terror fears and European immigration integration panic, may never come around again. More than anything else, the Islamists were undone by the same economic problems that allowed them and their leftist allies to topple their former governments.

The Muslim Brotherhood and Ennahda made the mistake of assuming that their political victories would allow them to implement their religious agenda before producing actual economic improvements. That was the opposite of the Turkish model where Erdogan's economic shell game produced enough gains to allow him to arrest political opponents and wreck the rule of law in order to implement Islamic law.

Another reason that Ennahda may have been more willing to step down was that Tunisia's economy is approaching a critical point. Economic growth in Tunisia fell 2% after the Arab Spring, its currency fell 10%, the budget deficit doubled and external debt is approaching 50%. Ennahda may have gambled that its best bet was to leave before its economic policies were completely discredited.

If the Muslim Brotherhood had been a little more pragmatic, it might have come to the same conclusion. Egypt's economy was a disaster and the new government has resorted to higher subsidies to hold on to its popularity. Those subsidies had to be cut by Mubarak and Morsi because Egypt couldn't afford them. And despite the flow of UAE and Saudi aid and investment money into Egypt, that hasn't changed.

Even Sudan's bloody butcher, President Omar Al-Bashir, was forced to cut fuel and cooking oil subsidies leading to violent riots.

In Morocco, the Muslim Brotherhood's subsidy cuts are touching off waves of protests, alienating its liberal allies and pitting it against the rival Islamists of the Justice and Spirituality Organization. With the left and even its own Islamists turning on the Moroccan Brotherhood, its political prospects are dim. But like Sudan, it can't afford to keep up the subsidies which cost billions.

Western support for Islamist regimes in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco came with the expectation of the IMF that they would make the hard decisions of economic reform. Morsi had trouble committing and his attempts to cut subsidized fuel use only further enraged the Egyptian public. Morocco's Brotherhood is finding out the dangers of touching fuel subsidies after mass outrage over an 8% fuel price increase.

But the successful counterrevolutions against Muslim Brotherhood rule may have actually salvaged its reputation.

Had the Brotherhood gone down in complete economic disaster, it would have been obvious that it was not only brutal and tyrannical, but also incompetent at everything except setting up front organizations and infiltrating other movements. Instead the Brotherhood has been able to play the victim. Instead of being seen as a failure, it has reinvented brutal power-hungry thugs like Morsi as revolutionary martyrs.

Imagine if the Bolsheviks had been forced out in the 1920s. Millions of lives would have been saved, but Stalin would have been remembered as a political martyr, instead of as a monster. Communism would not have been discredited in the stark economic terms that the slow collapse of the Soviet Union, its growing indebtedness to the United States and the defection of its allies into the Capitalist camp did.

The Muslim Brotherhood was forced out before its Caliphate experiment could become as great a disaster as the Soviet Union and its ideas have not been completely discredited. Discrediting it however might have proven as costly in human lives as the discrediting of Communism. As the Russian scientist Pavlov once said, if Communism were an experiment, he would not spare a frog's hind legs for it.

The Muslim Brotherhood's experiments in the Middle East deserve even less than a frog's hind legs.

The real story of the Arab Spring is not that the Muslim Brotherhood failed as a political movement, but that it was not up to the task of dealing with the economic turmoil. Like the Communists, it excelled at organizing its core activists, but proved incapable of actually running a country.

The Arab Spring was born out of economic discontent and it died because of economic discontent. The Muslim Brotherhood did not lose the battle for the soul of the Muslim Middle East.

It lost the battle for its wallet.

Fwd: Clapper 'Can't Guarantee' America Will Remain Safe During the Shutdown

Clapper couldn't guarantee America's safety before or after a shutdown.

Clapper 'Can't Guarantee' America Will Remain Safe During the Shutdown

AP

Philip Bump 809 ViewsOct 2, 2013

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa asked the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, if the government shutdown was putting America at risk. Clapper's response was not reassuring.

Grassley: Does America remain safe, even with a shutdown?

Clapper: Um. [pauses] I have to qualify that sir. I don't feel that I can make such a guarantee as each day of this sutdown goes by. I'm very concerned about the jeopardy to the country because of this.

Sen. Patrick Leahy: What you're saying is that it becomes cumulative. You're saying the danger and threat becomes cumulative.

Clapper: Yes, sir.

It is in Clapper's interests to suggest that his agency's work is indispensable at any level below 100 percent, of course; the hearing itself was predicated on allowing defense intelligence agencies like the NSA (which Clapper oversees) to argue for the importance of their work in the wake of the Edward Snowden revelations. Nor have Clapper's statements always been entirely accurate. (Sitting behind him at the hearing were members of the audience holding signs reading, "Clapper lies.") But even so, his statement was stark.

Later, Grassley raised an important point. The number of employees furloughed stems from Clapper's determination of who should be "excepted;" that is, whose work is so important that it cannot be allowed to lapse during the shutdown.

Grassley: If you can't tell us that America's safe, why then don't you simply use your authority to simply furlough fewer employees?

Clapper: Sir, we're gonna look at that. In fact, we're going to do it every day to see where we need — to see what is the right talent set or analytic expertise that we need. We're doing that as we speak. So I anticipate that as this thing drags out that we make adjustments and probably recall more people.

Particularly in NSA's case since they have a heavy military population which are not furloughed. So early on, NSA has excepted a very low percentage of its civilian employees. I am certain that over time, that condition cannot continue.

Expect this to quickly become a talking point in the shutdown debate.

New post on Fellowship of the Minds

Definition of Tyranny: You can't quit Obamacare

by Dr. Eowyn

The opposite of freedom is enslavement -- the denial of the exercise of our free will and free choice.

When a government engages in enslavement, under the guise of legislation and taxation, it is tyranny.

Obamacare is exactly that -- and more -- as explained by G. Keith Smith, MD is a board-certified anesthesiologist and the co-founder of The Surgery Center of Oklahoma.

In an article he wrote for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), Dr. Smith points out that not only are Americans *COMPELLED* against our will to participate in Obamacare because we can't opt out of it, the Unaffordable Care Act is a Ponzi scheme that exploits and enslaves young Americans who, under Obamacare, are *COMPELLED* to acquire and pay for health insurance (which most of them, being young and healthy, don't need) in order to subsidize the healthcare costs of older and sicker Americans.

That is why the POS in the White House has unleashed his army of brain-dead Hollyweird "celebrities" to pimp for Obamacare. Alas, too many young Americans are themselves brain-dead and eager to lend their support to the Unaffordable Care Act against their own interests.

Below is Dr. Keith Smith's article in its entirety.

If You Don't Like ObamaCare, Can You Quit?

By G. Keith Smith, M.D. - AAPS - Sept. 3, 2013

At a physician's roundtable years ago, I asked Senator Orrin Hatch why I couldn't punch out of Social Security, happy to leave all that I had paid "into the system" on the table. Why couldn't anyone, I asked, willing to leave behind all they had paid in, be allowed to walk away from these entitlements, as long as they were willing to forgo a future claim to these "benefits?"

He wouldn't answer me. The answer is obvious, though, isn't it? Without the current "contributions" of the young (and yes, draws on the credit line of the unborn), the current beneficiaries would discover that these programs were bankrupt.

Virtually all of the legislators that brought us Medicare are dead and gone now. All of the legislators who brought us Social Security are dead and gone. This is no coincidence, for these men realized that it was politically much more popular to give away government goodies paid for by the young and unborn than to tax the very same people who were to "benefit" from their "ideas" and "programs."

Dead now, these criminal politicians have largely escaped the harsh judgment they deserve for buying votes with property that would belong to future generations. Currency depreciation ("inflation"—the current political class's favorite way to rob the young for the benefit of their current constituents) has the same effect on future generations.

This is the essence of a Ponzi scheme. That is a fraudulent investment scheme that pays investors not out of profits but out of money paid in by later investors.

If you think about it, all government programs are Ponzi schemes. It is becoming increasingly clear that the same can be said about the [Un]Affordable Care Act. I call it the UCA, instead of the ACA.

UCA can't let young people out for the same reason that Social Security can't. Young workers aren't paying or saving for their own benefits, but for older, sicker people.

UCA rules force insurers to charge them more than they actually cost to help offset the higher cost of insuring older and sicker people. If the young don't sign up, premiums for everyone in the insurance pool will dramatically increase, as will the cost to the government.

People generally don't volunteer to be overcharged so that strangers can be undercharged. Hence the individual mandate, and tax penalties.

Young adults are beginning to see the reality as the UCA takes shape, and understand how they wind up losing from every angle. Hence the $600 million advertising campaign and multimillion dollar Navigator program to steer people into the program as quickly as possible. UCA promoters know how hard it is to take away an entitlement once people are trapped in it.

The idea is to entice people with subsidies so they won't notice how outrageous the premiums are. When enough are lured away from private insurance—the "crowding out" effect shown so well with the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—private insurance will collapse. Like Medicare beneficiaries now, all Americans will be without options for major medical insurance.

The success of the UCA hinges on the successful fleecing of the young people. This is the same immoral basis for Medicare and Social Security, "programs" that are still alive because participation in these Ponzi schemes is involuntary. With Bernie Madoff, at least people could take their lumps, having learned their lesson and move on. They didn't have to continue to give him money after they learned what he was up to.

I am optimistic that today's young people will reject the shackles that many of their elders have embraced.

_______________

In 1997, Dr. Keith Smith co-founded The Surgery Center of Oklahoma, an outpatient surgery center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, owned by 40 of the top physicians and surgeons in central Oklahoma. The center operates on the principle of the free market and is arguably the only one of its kind in the U.S., gaining the endorsement of policymakers and legislators nationally. Its website displays all-inclusive pricing for various surgical procedures. Many Canadians and uninsured Americans have been treated at his facility, taking advantage of the low and transparent pricing available. More and more self-funded insurance plans are taking advantage of Dr. Smith's pricing model, resulting in significant savings to their employee health plans. His hope is for as many facilities as possible to adopt a transparent pricing model, a move he believes will lower costs for all and improve quality of care.
