The Face of Tyranny

By Alan Caruba (Bio and Archives) Sunday, October 6, 2013

The history of civilization dating back some five millennia is one of unrelenting tyranny, rapaciousness, arrogance, and stupidity. The players and the places changed, but the slaughter was unremitting, the suffering broken only by occasional brief periods of peace, good weather and crops. For most of the past, war, famine, and disease killed most people.

During the famous soliloquy of Hamlet, he contemplates taking his own life, saying "There's the respect that makes calamity of so long life—for who would bear the whips and scorns of time, the oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely, the pangs of despised love, the law's delay, the insolence of office…"

This list of woes neatly sums up the times in which we live as Americans endure many of these same abuses from a President who seems to enjoy displaying his contempt for them. He has plunged the nation into the highest debt in its history, is using the government shutdown as a crisis to divert attention from recent failures, and is flirting with a national default that would create domestic and international havoc…all while blaming the Republicans, the real end game.

As an October 3rd Wall Street Journal editorial noted, however, "House GOP leaders also insist they don't want a default, and they've already passed a bill to prevent it—not that the media have paid any attention. First sponsored in 2011 by California Republican Tom McClintock and Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, the Full Faith and Credit Act is essentially an insurance policy against miscalculation. Their bill certifies that U.S. sovereign debt will always be repaid, on time and in full."

It is beginning to dawn on a lot of people that Barack Obama is the face of tryanny, a man for whom the Constitution, the democratic process and its need for compromise, exist only to be spurned.

Any President who is happy to preside over closing the White House to public tours, who authorizes placing barricades around Washington War Memorial that is normally open 24 hours a day as well as the Normandy, France D-Day cemetery where our soldiers are buried, is more than merely heartless, but represents a level of evil intent never before seen in anyone who has held that office.

The closing of the Normandy cemetery reminded me that history records that resistance to such tyrants has given rise to the rights of those they governed. The brother of England's Richard the Lionhearted, John, had inherited the throne and through his incompetence in 1203 had lost Normandy, the last remaining possession in Western France the English had conquered.

The ill will that his barons felt, in part from the constant taxation John imposed, led them to renounce their allegiance to the crown of England. In 1215 they assembled at Runnymede, a water meadow on the Thames and presented John with the Magna Carta that spelled out their rights and those of all Englishmen, protecting them and their property against arbitrary arrest and confiscation without due process of law.

King John was actually fortunate. History records that rulers who acted ruthlessly were often assassinated or beheaded. It was commonplace.

The history of the United States records that the colonists, British subjects, had enjoyed self-rule for easily a century before the British crown, George III, seeking to replenish the treasury in lieu of having fought the French and Indian War in 1763 on behalf of the colonies, imposed the Stamp Act in 1765. It evoked such resistance that it was repealed and replaced a year later with the Townshend Acts that imposed taxes on paper, paint, glass and tea imported from England. They were followed by more resistance and led to an altercation on March 5, 1770 that killed a number of citizens and became known as the Boston Massacre.

For a list of what Americans had come to regard as usurpations of power by the king, one need only read the Declaration of Independence.

By then, the governing of the British empire had spawned a bureaucracy that was not only large, but "appallingly inefficient" noted historian Nathaniel Philbrick in his book, "Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, a Revolution." After the Boston Tea Party, the king sent a flotilla to seal off Boston Harbor and increased the army in America. By then, George III was in no mood to negotiate.

President Obama has said he, too, does not intend to negotiate with the House of Representatives, constitutionally the body of government empowered to authorize all expenditures for the maintenance of the government.

The House has sent any number of proposed measures to keep the entire government funded, but has also expressed its wish to defund or delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act which is widely unpopular. Against the protest of millions it was imposed solely by the Democratic Party when it controlled both houses of Congress.

Modern-day Americans have been enduring what many regard as acts of tyranny and have begun to regard the President as not merely incompetent, but bent on a course of action to destroy the nation. This is the stuff of revolution.

BREITBART

Armed Guards Kick Senior Citizens Out of Yellowstone Park

Thousands of people found themselves inside a national park when the government shutdown went into effect. Pat Vaillancourt and her tour group "which included senior citizen visitors from Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States, were locked in Yellowstone National Park hotel under armed guard."

The seniors were treated harshly by armed park employees until they were able to leave according to Vaillancourt.  Once they began the journey out of the park, "the bus was not allowed to halt at all along the 2.5-hour trip out of the park, not even to stop at private bathrooms that were open along the route."

"We've become a country of fear, guns and control," said Vaillancourt, who grew up in Lawrence. "It was like they brought out the armed forces. Nobody was saying, 'we're sorry,' it was all like — " as she clenched her fist and banged it against her forearm.

Vaillancourt was on a nine day tour of western parks "with about four dozen senior citizen tourists." As her bus stopped to take a picture of some bison, "an armed ranger came by and ordered them to get back in, saying they couldn't 'recreate.' The tour guide, who had paid a $300 fee the day before to bring the group into the park, argued that the seniors weren't 'recreating,' just taking photos."

As they approached the Old Faithful Inn located next to the famous Old Faithful geyser, she could see barricades around the geyser and the seniors were locked inside the Inn with armed guards.

"They looked like Hulk Hogans, armed. They told us you can't go outside," she said. "Some of the Asians who were on the tour said, 'Oh my God, are we under arrest?' They felt like they were criminals."

The driver of the tour bus eventually brought his group to a full-service bathroom after the 2.5 journey out of the park.  The bus attempted to stop at an in-park dude ranch to let the tourists use the bathroom, but the ranch had been warned "that its license to operate would be revoked if it allowed the bus to stop. So the bus continued on to Livingston, Mont., a gateway city to the park."

TD here: I think it's time some of these ego tripping park rangers picked on somebody who can fight back. You can bet these circus clowns wouldn't make a move like that on a bus load of Navy Seals.

Fwd: Why the Left Hates the Old

Why the Left Hates the Old

Posted By Dennis Prager On October 8, 2013

The latest left-wing tactic to discredit conservative views is to dismiss the age and race of conservatives. "Old white males" and "old white people" are the left's latest favored negative epithets for those holding conservative views.

Chris Matthews of MSNBC, Thomas Friedman and Paul Krugman of the New York Times, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ("angry old white men") are among the many on the left who have used this epithet.

Last week, on her nightly MSNBC show, Rachel Maddow showed a picture of an ad for Washington, D.C. talk radio station WRC that featured the station's talk show hosts. You will notice, she said, that they are all "old white Republican males." It was brought to my attention because I am one of those talk show hosts (and, it should be noted, nearly all of my colleagues and I are younger than her colleague, Chris Matthews, an old white Democratic male.)

What is going on here?

The answer is: quite a bit. The left's dismissal of old people is much more than another left-wing ad hominem attack. Therefore, to understand it is to understand much of what animates leftism.

As a rule, the left rejects the old.

The left's attack on teaching the works of "Dead White European Males" was one such example. It infuriated the left that Shakespeare was studied so much more than, let us say, living Guatemalan playwrights. As a result, one can now obtain a college degree in English — let alone every other liberal arts department — without having taken a course in Shakespeare.

So, too, in art and music, the new is almost always favored over the old. New composers and artists — no matter how untalented — are studied as much as or more than the great masters of old. And the old standards of excellence are neglected in favor of the latest avant-garde experimentation.

Rejection of the old is a reason the left has contempt for the Bible. To progressives, the idea of having 2,000 and 3,000-year-old texts guide a person's behavior today is ludicrous.

Low regard for the old is also a major factor in the left's dismissal of the Founders and of the original intent of the Constitution. Talk about "old white males," the Founders are white males who are now over 200-years-old.

What could they possibly have known or understood that a progressive living today does not know more about or understand better?

What, then, is at the core of the left's contempt for the old, and its celebration of the new and of change?

There are two primary answers.

One is the yearning for utopia. Since Marx, the left has sought utopia in this world. And that means constantly transforming every aspect of society. As then-Senator Barack Obama said prior to the 2008 election: "We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America."

By definition, those who seek to transform consider the old essentially worthless.

The other answer is self-esteem. The left began the self-esteem movement in large measure because of its own high self-esteem. Those on the left are certain that they are smarter, kinder, more moral and more compassionate than — in every way superior to — their opponents.

That is a major reason for the left's problem with the old: If the old is great, then they and their new ideas are probably not that great.

Just about everyone who is not on the cultural left knows that all the great masters were incomparably superior to Jackson Pollock and other 20th-centuries artists who produced meaningless and talentless art. And because there are so few artists at any time who measure up to the old standards (standards that are synonymous with standards of excellence), the old standards have simply been abandoned.

This applies equally to morality. The left doesn't want to be bound or answerable to a higher moral authority. Rather, one's heart and reason are the best moral guides. Here, too, the old codes, especially as embodied in traditional religion, must be overthrown.

Prior to the ascendance of the left, it was assumed that the old had more wisdom than the young. Indeed, even every leftist I have asked, "Are you wiser today than 20 years ago?" has answered in the affirmative.

Nevertheless the left has transformed "old" — a title that commanded respect in every civilization prior to the pre-1960s West — into a pejorative.

As a result we live in the age of new music, new art, new families, new morality, new education, and now new marriage. If you think all these are good, then "old white males," like almost everything else old, do indeed constitute a threat. If you think the left's belief in "new" and "change" hurts society, "old" sounds good.

Fwd: Obama's Shutdown: Special privileges for Obama's radical friends while veterans are thrown out

Obama's Shutdown: Parks for Amnesty Activists Only

Posted By Matthew Vadum On October 8, 2013

President Obama's unprecedentedly vicious, carefully choreographed campaign of shutdown sadism is becoming even more thuggish as the fiscal 2014 budget dispute heads into its second week.

But the lawless Obama administration is granting an indulgence to its radical friends who support immigration amnesty and tearing down the nation's borders.

As Charlie Spiering reports in the Washington Examiner, the Caudillo-in-Chief is allowing the "Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform" rally to proceed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., today even though signs inform visitors that the Mall is closed because of the federal government shutdown.

"About 30 members of Congress are expected to attend the rally, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.," Spiering writes. "The event is hosted by several immigration activist groups, together with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the AFL-CIO."

Acting on the authority of the Alinskyite Chicago thug temporarily occupying the White House, the jackbooted National Park Service told charter boat captains in Florida that 1,100 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean are "closed" because of the government shutdown. Until the shutdown ends, fishing boats are banned.

Under orders from Obama to generate maximum pain, federal law enforcement officers have also been blocking access to open-air national monuments such as Mount Rushmore, various war memorials, and taxpayer-supported public spaces across the nation. Veterans have been committing acts of civil disobedience by storming the "barrycades" that block public access to open-air war memorials.

The NPS has also shuttered privately owned restaurants, inns, and marinas around the country using paid armed guards while simultaneously maintaining it lacks the funding and labor force to do so. Some in Congress are demanding hearings on these Obama administration abuses.

In a particularly outrageous case that is the very definition of fascism, that is, private ownership under government control, 77-year-old Joyce Spencer and her 80-year-old husband Ralph were evicted from the home they own in Lake Mead, Nevada, that happens to sit on federal land. Heartless Obama bureaucrats said property owners there are allowed to visit their own property only to retrieve belongings.

"Unfortunately overnight stays are not permitted until a budget is passed and the park can reopen," the NPS explained.

Over in the Left's parallel universe, evil, intransigent Republicans are preventing President Obama from getting the public funds he needs to walk on water, heal the lame and sick, and provide nutritious school lunches for multitudes of needy children who can't survive without the largesse of Uncle Sam. This is barely, of course, an exaggeration as leftists in the media and elsewhere keep churning out the kind of cartoonish propaganda we've come to expect from Third World socialist dictatorships.

But back in the real world, time marches on as infantile Democrats histrionically whine about imagined Republican obstructionism, all the while turning foot-stomping into an art.

With Mussolini-like resolve, President Obama continues to harangue House Republicans, robotically accusing them of refusing to hold votes or compromise on spending resolutions that could re-open shuttered portions of the government. In reality, a week after the new federal fiscal year began, only House Republicans have been holding votes or offering compromises to the other side.

It is the Senate, which is in the death grip of Obama's fellow Democrats, that is refusing to act. As Obama tries to collapse the stock market, taunting investors by saying they "should be worried" about current budget negotiations, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) continues to function as brick wall. Reid is preventing senators from considering a slew of temporary funding measures approved by the House in the last few days that are aimed at re-opening parts of the federal government.

Public opinion polls, which, on complex public policy questions can be as scientific as soothsayers of antiquity reading bird entrails, nonetheless suggest the public isn't buying the facile argument that the shutdown is entirely the handiwork of Republican lawmakers.

A Fox News poll unveiled Friday shows Democrats and GOPers sharing the blame for the shutdown. In the survey 25 percent of respondents blamed House Speaker John Boehner and 24 percent blamed Obama. According to Big Journalism's John Nolte, this is "[m]ore proof this is not 1995. The GOP were losing 2-to-1 during that shutdown."

A CNN poll from yesterday says 63 percent of Americans are angry at Republicans, while 57 percent are angry at Democrats. An ABC/Washington Post poll says 55 percent of registered voters disapprove of Obama's handling of the shutdown, compared to 43 percent who approve of it.

President Obama is doing all these horrible, petty, irritating things like needlessly shutting down national parks in order to rankle voters in the hope they'll blame Republicans for the ongoing government shutdown. Liberals, in typical fashion, predict apocalypse because of the shutdown.

The Obama approach is called the "Washington Monument Strategy." The theory is that such minor annoyances amplify the consequences of budget cuts, or in this case, of the government shutdown. The goal is to force congressional Republicans to surrender their principles and agree to fund Obamacare — and in the process look wimpy and lose the support of their grassroots.

The Washington Monument Strategy easily fits into the world of community organizing.

Rules for Radicals author Saul Alinsky taught that the community organizer's first job is "community disorganization" by which he meant the manufacture of crises designed to inflame the community. The organizer must "create the issues or problems." He must "rub raw the resentments of the people of the community" and then direct its rage at specific targets and scapegoats, providing "a channel into which the people can angrily pour their frustrations."

Obama is on a drive to turn America into a one-party state, so naturally his wrath is directed at Republicans. The GOP makes for an easy target because Obama knows the mainstream media won't blame him for anything bad that happens no matter how painfully obvious his culpability may be.

Amazingly, the House Republicans, who have a record of caving in when Obama applies pressure, are holding firm and appear to be digging in for a prolonged fight.

Speaker Boehner actually accused Obama of playing games.

It's a new day in America.

Fwd: TruthRevolt Takes Dead Aim At Mainstream Media And Its Sponsors

TruthRevolt Takes Dead Aim At Mainstream Media And Its Sponsors

October 7, 2013 by Ben Bullard

TruthRevolt, a new website / project born of a collaboration between Breitbart's Ben Shapiro and the David Horowitz Freedom Center, launched today. It's an ambitious, self-styled foil to progressive media watchdog Media Matters, and it's taking aim not only at the mainstream media, but the sponsors who support their programming and celebrity pundits.

From TruthRevolt's mission statement:

The media win elections for the left. It's not the left's competence in office; leftists have demonstrated none. It's not the left's ideas; leftist ideas have failed everywhere they have been tried. The left wins for one simple reason: leftists control the information distribution system in the United States. And they use that system to pillory conservatives as heartless bigots intent on harming the poor and targeting minorities.

The media must be destroyed where they stand. That is our mission at Truth Revolt. The goal of TruthRevolt is simple: unmask leftists in the media for who they are, destroy their credibility with the American public, and devastate their funding bases.

TruthRevolt focuses on high-profile media members, and holding them accountable. But TruthRevolt does not stop there. TruthRevolt understands that all politics is local, and therefore looks to fight leftist propaganda at the local level, monitoring local newspapers, television and radio. TruthRevolt also seeks to stop the left dead in its tracks when it comes to training the next generation, our college campuses.

TruthRevolt works to make advertisers and funders aware of the leftist propaganda they sponsor – and bringing social consequences to bear to create pressure on such advertisers and funders.

Fresh out of the gate, the group took aim at Al Sharpton and his MSNBC sponsor Mondelez (owner of Ritz crackers), calling Sharpton "one of the greatest race hoaxers and divisive demagogues of the last half-century." TruthRevolt established its M.O. by launching a petition against Mondelez, setting an attainable signature threshold (1,000 names) and directing traffic to the petition by featuring a lead story about Sharpton on the TruthRevolt website's landing page.

That petition had attracted 1,791 signatures by early Monday afternoon, making the project's initial effort a success – though what a success entails, so far, seems to be collecting signatures instead of pressuring advertisers into actual capitulation.

Still, it's an interesting idea that may buck typically-unsuccessful small-scale boycott efforts by effectively crowdsourcing the implicit threat of boycotts without actually uttering the B-word. Nowhere does TruthRevolt claim to be a boycotting outfit; rather, it seeks to focus concern in a concentrated fashion so that corporate sponsors understand there's a wider market for media out there than one-sided liberal swill they've been subsidizing.

Obama's Golf Course Has Been Spared from the Shutdown

One of Obama's preferred golf courses, the course on Andrews Airforce Base remains open during the government shutdown.  The grocery stores on the base, where troops get discounted groceries for their families are, however, closed.  They will shop "at local stores that cost about 30 percent more, Lieutenant General Raymond Mason, the service's deputy chief of staff for logistics, said yesterday at a House hearing."

The Andrews Air Force Base golf course is funded through user fees and that's why it remains open, said Air Force Captain Lindy Singleton, chief of public affairs for the 11th Wing at Andrews.

Obama hit the links last weekend for a round, on the eve of the possible shutdown. Last week the President played his 35th round of golf this year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Ms. Pelosi:
I write to you out of utter disdain! You are as despicable and un-American as the traitor Jane Fonda.
I am a soon to be 65 year-old who has voted in every state and local election since 1966. I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats alike. I have worked on campaigns for both Republicans and Democrats, white and black. I served the country that I love in Vietnam , as my son did in the Middle East . I was awarded two bronze stars. I have been involved in politics since age 6 when my father was campaign manager for a truly great American Congressman, Charles Raper Jonas, who worked for his constituents and his country, and was to be admired, unlike you.
You obviously havent read the Constitution recently, if ever, the Federalist Papers, or even David McCulloughs book on John Adams. You ought to take the time while riding around in your government provided luxury executive jet to do just that. You represent Socialistic and even Marxist principals that our founding fathers tried to avoid when setting out the capitalistic republican form of government represented by our Constitution.
I find it interesting that you and your husband are multi-millionaires with much of your fortune being made as a result of your public service. You have controlled legislation that has enhanced your husbands investments both on and off shore. At the same time you redistributed the wealth of others. Our system of a free market economy is being destroyed by the likes of you, Harry Reid, and now our President. You ride around in a Gulfstream airplane at the tax payers expense while criticizing the presidents of companies who produced something for the economy. You add nothing to the economy of the United States ; you only subtract therefrom.
I would like to suggest that you return to the city of fruitcakes and nuts and eat your husbands canned tuna and pineapple produced by illegal immigrants and by workers who have been excluded from the protection that 90% of the legal workers in the United States have.
I await your defeat in the next election with glee...
Dont ever use the term un-American again for protesters who love this country and are exercising their rights upon which this country was founded. By the way, while I served in the Army, I was spit on by the same type of lunatics who support you and who you probably supported in the 60s and 70s. You are an embarrassment to all of us who served so that you would have the protected right of free speech to call us un-American. But at the same time, I have the right to write you to notify you that I consider you to be un-American, as do the majority of the people of this formerly great country. You are a true disgrace to most of the people who served this country by offering themselves for public service in the United States Congress.
I feel certain your aides will not share this letter with you, but I intend to share it with many...
