Fwd: a new project i'm working on...

---------

Happy new year and I hope your Christmas was as great as you all are. You've probably seen my posts on this blowing up Facebook lately, but I wanted to write a personal email letting you know directly about this new thing I'm up to that should be interesting to libertarians, media/communications people, and badasses across the board...

You can check out the website for it to get the full story and watch the video, but basically, I am undertaking a multimedia journalism project -- essay, video, photography -- on the stories of Iranian immigrants to the United States and their American-born children. I am crowdfunding $5,000 by February 1st in order to do this as part of a cross-country trip and seminar series organized by the Millennial Trains Project. My project itself is called Rose Petal Pathways: Journeys Through Iranian America.

You guys know from our friendship that I have a personal stake in doing a good job on this, being the daughter of a man who left Iran in the wake of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. And since so much political stuff is happening right now between Iran and the United States, I think that documenting the perspectives of the people who have a foot in both worlds could be a really revealing, really powerful undertaking.

I consider you my good friends and I know you're all very passionate about these kinds of grassroots/indie activities, so I'm reaching out in the hopes you'll decide to spread the word in your networks and maybe even contribute as well. You can go to the website (http://bit.ly/rpp-iran) to get more detail and donate if you like what you see. Right now I'm hoping those who are so inclined will contribute in the $25 range, but, of course, any amount counts.

Please spread the word to all of your friends -- ALL of them! ;) -- that a fellow libertarian is reaching out for support!

Always yours,
Julie

Fwd: Why Hackers really need your Phone Numbers

Why Hackers really need your Phone Numbers

Posted by: HNBulletin  January 4, 2014

Lessons from the information breach at Snapchat

although most people wouldn't provide their telephone number to a unfamiliar person on the road, they're contented to share their numbers with Facebook , Google , and supplementary sites. But as millions of immature Snapchat users just educated, phone numbers are helpful information to hackers.

On Wednesday, Snapchat happened to be the first corporation to have its information hacked in 2014 at what time 4.6 million account consumer names and partial phone numbers were sent online as a forewarning to those using the photograph messaging service. "Our inspiration behind the publication was to raise the communal awareness in the order of the issue, and as well put public strain on Snapchat to get this develop fixed," the suspected hackers informed tech site TheVerge.com . A spokesperson for Snapchat rejected to comment, nevertheless the company unconfined a blog postsaying it's supplementary counter-actions "to combat abuse and spam."

Consumers are supposed to be cagey about sharing their cell phone numbers, safety measures experts say. "Phone contacts are unique identifiers that lean to last for a extended time," utters Michael Fertik, CEO at Reputation.com, a site that assists consumers shielding their privacy online. "You alter your phone number a lot less often than your IP address as well as probably even your residential address." at the same time as Snapchat users have false usernames, many citizens use the equivalent I.D. across a variety of social networks, states Graham Cluley, a U.K. safety blogger and technology counselor. "Use a dissimilar user I.D. than the one you makes use of publicly on Facebook as well as Twitter," he says. What's additional, typing just a cell phone number to the Facebook will expose the profiles of the proprietor if he or she appended it to their account data.

Why hackers yearn for your mobile phone number

If you wouldn't offer your cell phone number to a outsider, why would you confer it to a website? As Snapchat consumers found, there's wealth to be made from recognizing your cell phone number, Quentin Fottrell reports. Photo: Getty Images.

Snapchat's assumed data breach is moreover a misstep for a corporation founded on the belief of preserving your online secrecy. Commenced in September 2011, community networkers can send "Snaps"— videos or photos—that end between 1 and 10 seconds, in accordance on the time boundary set by the correspondent. The service—which supposedly spurned a $3 billion offer as of Facebook preceding November—has in excess of 100 million users as well as shares 400 million snaps on a daily basis. "It's discomforting for Snapchat," Cluley states, but could be further uncomfortable for its consumers. After all, photographs can be kept by receivers who "screen-grab" them in instance. "These photographs and mobile contacts could potentially be utilized for cyber-bullying in addition to blackmail," he says, particularly if they're associated to a real name.

Hackers can as well false a caller I.D. by using your contact to sidestep a safety step, speaks Bo Holland, organizer and CEO of AllClear ID, an individuality protection firm. Even devoid of a real name, though, customers can be spammed with content messages—recognized as "smishing"—asking citizens to click on links that include malware—a virus that can reclaim data stored there: photographs, contact catalogs, emails in addition to passwords. "Phone numbers are a structure block for hackers," speaks Adam Levin, co-initiator of online security corporation Identity Theft 911. A number of 37.3 million Internet customers faced phishing assails in 2013, an 87% grow over the last three years, in proportion to a survey from online safety measures company Kaspersky Lab. "Smartphones are not now communication devices," Levin utters. "They are information storage devices."

So why do corporations want your cell phone number? "It's is a essential and useful part of e-business," Fertik speaks, "but you are supposed to not give it lacking a specific reason." For those lingering for a package or getting into a flight, for example, it assists to receive a text note about delays. In addition, mobile numbers can be a valuable two-factor authentication, states e-commerce advisor Bryan Eisenberg. Step one: input your consumer name and code word to your email, communal networking or bank account. Step two: receive a text memo to validate any transforms. This can too be done with a less important email address or a Google Voice contact that redirects calls plus texts to your phone; for that reason, Eisenberg has provided his mobile number toward Google, but hasn't agreed it to Facebook. He doesn't contain a Snapchat account.

Fwd: OBAMA TOPS 'CORRUPT' LIST FOR ACTING 'AS A 1-MAN CONGRESS'

http://www.wnd.com/2014/01/obama-tops-corrupt-list-for-acting-as-a-1-man-congress/

Obama tops 'corrupt' list for acting 'as a 1-man Congress'

2013 Washington malefactors also include Clinton, Holder, Boehner

Published: 18 hours ago

by Bob Unruh joined WND in 2006 after nearly three decades with the Associated Press, as well as several Upper Midwest newspapers, where he covered everything from legislative battles and sports to tornadoes and homicidal survivalists. He is also a photographer whose scenic work has been used commercially.

President Obama leads the "Top Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians" for 2013, named by the Washington watchdog Judicial Watch.

This year the "honor" is for acting "as a one-man Congress, rewriting entire sections of federal law on his own."

Judicial Watch annually releases a list of the top politicians who misbehave while purportedly representing taxpayers in Washington. The 2013 "honors" go to, in alphabetical order, House Speaker John Boehner, CIA Director John Brennan, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Hillary Clinton, Attorney General Eric Holder, former IRS commissioner Steve T. Miller and former IRS official Lois Lerner, ex-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Several are perennial selections, including Obama, who has been on the list for seven years already, and Holder.

Obama, the organization contends, "is a master at catch-me-if-you can, corrupt politics."

"Not only is his administration secretive and dishonest; its callous disregard for the rule of law undermines our constitutional republic," the report said.

"Perhaps Obama's most outrageous actions over the past year were his continual lies about the ability of Americans to keep their own health insurance under Obamacare. According the Free Beacon, Obama misled the American people a total of 36 times between 2008 and 2013 with his promise, 'If you like your health insurance, you can keep it.' And according to NBC News, Obama knew, even as he repeated his lie, that 'more than 40 to 67 percent of those in the individual market would not be able to keep their plans, even if they liked them.'

Read the inside story on Washington corruption, from the ultimate Washington insider, Jack Abramoff, in "Capitol Punishment."

"According to the Galen Institute, Obama has now unilaterally rewritten the Obamacare law as passed by Congress 14 times by executive fiat, with the majority of those changes coming in 2013. Those changes include such major overhauls as the congressional opt-out, eviscerating the individual mandate, and delaying the employer mandate. The latest Obama fix came on December 20, when he suddenly moved to allow hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their insurance due to Obamacare to sign up for bare-bone 'catastrophic' plans," it said.

The list also said that throughout 2013, the Obama family "continued to use the White House as its own personal travel bureau and the taxpayers as their personal expense account."

While Obama, the report said, "quickly disavowed any knowledge of the IRS assault on tea party and other conservative groups leading up to the 2012 presidential election, the fact is that it was the president himself who fingered the groups for what might be called 'special handling.'"

Obama had blasted conservative groups with attacks such as "We don't know who's behind these ads and we don't know who's paying for them,"  "You don't know if it's a foreign controlled corporation" and "The only people who don't want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide."

Boehner

Judicial Watch charged that House Speaker John Boehner has become a master at what Government Accountability Institute President Peter Schweizer calls the "Tollbooth Strategy."

That's when donations are accepted to move legislation down the road toward law, the report explained.

Among the actions cited were the Wireless Tax Fairness Act, which was brought up for a vote the day after Boehner's campaign collected "33 checks from wireless industry executives, totaling almost $40,000."

Brennan

Judicial Watch cites Brennan's decision to reveal the extent of U.S. penetration into al-Qaida, which  forced a successful spy operation to be shut down. He also apparently orchestrated the administration's attempt to influence the storyline of the movie "Zero Dark Thirty."

Chambliss

The Georgia Republican was cited because the New York Times reported his abuses of loopholes through which campaign cash was converted into a lavish lifestyle.

The expenses included $10,000 on golf at Pebble Beach, nearly $27,000 at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and $107,752 at the exclusive Breakers resort in Palm Beach, Fla., the report said.

Clinton

Judicial Watch said Hillary Clinton's downfall was Benghazi.

"On Jan. 23, 2013, outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified to congressional committees regarding the terrorist attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which led to the murder of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American citizens. At times evasive, at other times defensive and aggressive, Clinton delivered her version of events in the days before and after the murders in Benghazi. And, in the end, the Secretary of State pretended to take 'responsibility,' but gave a predictable response regarding who is to blame: '…the level of responsibility for the failures…was set at the Assistant Secretary of State level and below,' Clinton said, referring to an investigation of the incident. In other words, this was not my fault," Judicial Watch reported.

Holder

He's a "regular" on the list, Judicial Watch said.

"In May 2013, Holder may well have committed perjury when he was involved in a back-and-forth with Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., about whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) could prosecute reporters under the Espionage Act for publishing classified material. In response to Johnson's interrogatories Holder made the following statement: "In regard to potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material – this is not something I've ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy."

However, Holder previously had approved a search warrant for the email account and phone records of Fox News reporter James Rosen, Judicial Watch said.

Miller and Lerner

The trouble for Miller and Lerner was that the IRS admitted to targeting anti-Obama tea party organizations and other conservatives during the 2012 election. The IRS "purposely stonewalled the approval of nonprofit applications from 'tea party' and other conservative groups that were seeking tax exempt status."

"According to a report by the agency's inspector general released in May 2013, for more than 18 months beginning in early 2010: 'The IRS used inappropriate criteria that identified for review tea party and other organizations applying for tax-exempt status based upon their names or policy positions instead of indications of potential political campaign intervention.'"

Lerner headed the department that was involved.

Napolitano

Judicial Watch explained she "played a major role in doing an end-run around existing immigration law by helping President Obama implement his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) directive in lieu of DREAM Act passage."

Sebelius

"The Obama administration's own lawyers determined Sebelius could be fired for violating federal law when reports surfaced that she had campaigned for Obama while acting in her official capacity as an executive branch official during the last presidential campaign. This made Kathleen Sebelius the first member ever of a president's cabinet to be found guilty of violating the Hatch Act," Judicial Watch said, among other issues.

Dishonorable mentions went to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, outgoing Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and incoming Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, former Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., and National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

Last year's list included Obama, GOP Rep. Vern Buchanan, Holder, Clinton, Rice, Steven Chu, Illinois Democrat Jesse Jackson Jr., New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, Reid, Florida Republican David Rivera and Sebelius.

The entire 2011 list: Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala.; former Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.; Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla.; Holder; Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill.; Obama; Rep. Laura Richardson, D-Calif.; Rep. David Rivera, R-Fla.; Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.; and Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska.

White House announces new executive actions on background checks for guns

Posted By Alexis Levinson On 2:17 PM 01/03/2014 In | No Comments

The White House announced two new executive actions Friday that would expand the government's access to mental health information during background checks on gun buyers.

The two new actions clarify what constitutes a mental health problem that might prohibit gun ownership and allow states more wiggle room in disclosing such personal medical information.

One executive action frees states from some of the privacy laws that prohibit the disclosure of patients' medical information, allowing institutions to input mental health information relevant to gun ownership into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, otherwise known as NICS.

It modifies the HIPAA Privacy Rule to allow institutions "to disclose to the NICS the identities of persons prohibited by federal law from possessing or receiving a firearm for reasons related to mental health."

Not everyone who has struggled with mental health issues is prohibited from owning a gun, but people who have been "involuntarily committed to a mental institution or otherwise have been determined by a lawful authority to be a danger to themselves or others or to lack the mental capacity to manage their own affairs" will be noted as such in the NICS.

"There is a strong public safety need for this information to be accessible to the NICS, and some states are currently under-reporting or not reporting certain information to the NICS at all," HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement. "This proposed rulemaking is carefully balanced to protect and preserve individuals' privacy interests, the patient-provider relationship, and the public's health and safety."

The other executive action, issued by the Department of Justice, clarifies what exactly in someone's mental health history would prohibit them from owning or purchasing a gun. Persons who fall under the category of "adjudicated as a mental defective" and "committed to a mental institution" include those who are "incompetent to stand trial or not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect; persons lacking mental responsibility or deemed insane; and persons found guilty but mentally ill, regardless of whether these determinations are made by a state, local, federal or military court," as well as "a person committed to involuntary inpatient or outpatient treatment."

"We are taking an important, commonsense step to clarify the federal firearms regulations, which will strengthen our ability to keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. "This step will provide clear guidance on who is prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law for reasons related to mental health.

The executive actions come less than a month after the one year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 elementary school children and six adults dead. The shooting rampage sparked off a movement in Congress to pass background checks for gun owners, but ultimately congress could not agree to any such legislation.

The National Rifle Association declined to comment immediately on the executive actions.

"Nothing to say until we have a chance to review the actual language of these proposals," emailed NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam.

Department of Health and Human Services Orders 14,000,000 doses of Potassium Iodide to be Delivered by February

FEMA has ordered millions body bags. The Department of Homeland Security ordered 1.6 Billion rounds of ammunition. Of course there is no dialogue as to why such things are needed here in America, a country so far in the red future generation's babies will be spitting up ink. So what comes next? How about 14 million doses of potassium iodide.

The Department of Health and Human Services has ordered 14 million doses of potassium iodide, the compound that protects the body from radioactive poisoning in the aftermath of severe nuclear accidents, to be delivered before the beginning of February.

Potassium iodide helps block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland and is used by victims of severe nuclear accidents or emergencies. Under current regulations, states with populations living within 10 miles of a nuclear plant are encouraged, but not required, to maintain a supply of potassium iodide.

The ongoing crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant has prompted concerns that the purchase is connected to the threat posed by radioactive debris washing up on the shores of the west coast or the potential for another natural disaster occurring in Japan which could impact the U.S.

Fwd: Man Attacked by Robber with Gun Fights Back and is Charged with Murder

Man Attacked by Robber with Gun Fights Back and is Charged with Murder

By Onan Coca / 4 January 2014 / 27 Comments

A Washington, D.C. man who was attacked by a gunman will face murder charges for killing his attacker in an attempt to flee. It seems that the city of Washington now wants victims to allow their attackers to beat them, rob them, and perhaps even kill them instead of fighting back.

35 Year old tow truck driver Corey Stoddard was attacked by 22 year-old Kevin Crouch in a tow lot in Washington, DC several days ago. Crouch asked the truck driver about a car on the lot, and when Stoddard told him they didn't have a car like that, Crouch drew a gun and began threatening him. The truck driver tried to run away from the gunman but he tripped and fell. At that point Crouch began repeatedly hitting Stoddard in the head with his gun.

Thinking fast, Stoddard reached for his wallet and tossed it away prompting his assailant to finally stop beating him and going after the discarded wallet. At that point Stoddard climbed into his tow truck and drove over his assailant dragging him along a sidewalk. Crouch died several hours later at a nearby hospital. When the police arrived on the scene they found Crouch's body lying on top of a broken pellet gun, presumably the weapon he used to threaten the tow truck driver.

Corey Stoddard has admitted to all of the specifics in the police's case and is now being charged second degree murder. The local police have rejected arguments that Stoddard was trying to escape Crouch in his tow truck, or that he may have been acting in self-defense. A judge ordered Stoddard released, but he will be monitored with an ankle bracelet while he is "free." Both men had criminal histories before this incident, and Stoddard's next appearance in court will come in late January.

I wasn't there. I don't know if Stoddard was trying to run away, defend himself, or did indeed maliciously run down Crouch. However, I would hope that the DC police would give the benefit of the doubt to the man who was brutally attacked and threatened at gunpoint. There can be no way that they can be sure what was running through the victim's mind when he climbed into his truck. If his only thoughts were of survival, perhaps he felt like he had to run over Crouch to stay alive? While the death of a person is always a tragedy, when one chooses to use violence and intimidation to steal from others, they put their own lives at risk.

Kevin Crouch chose to wield a gun to threaten and rob another person… his death is his own fault…he'd still be alive if he'd chosen not to turn to crime.

Current Events in Al-Qaedastan

For those not familiar with Al-Qaedastan, since it's pretty new, it's the largest Arab country in the world. It's about half of what used to be called Syria and Iraq, with outposts all through Syria and Lebanon.

It's the same guys they used to call "Al-Qaeda in Iraq." They now call their country, ISIL, a new name to include the addition of the Eastern half of Syria.

---

Al-Qaedastan's eastern border in Ramadi and Fallujah continues to expand. When they made their move and seized control, the Sunni tribes and Shiite government forgot their squabbles and united against them. But Al-Qaedastan is defeating them on the battlefield...

"BAGHDAD — Sunni militants fighting under the banner of Al Qaeda appeared to make gains across Anbar Province on Saturday, using snipers and rocket-propelled grenades in heavy street fighting, as they secured nearly full control of Falluja and captured the strategic town Karma. Government forces and the tribal militias fighting with them seemed unable to resist the militants' advances..."
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/05/world/middleeast/shelling-in-iraqi-city-held-by-qaeda-linked-militants-kills-at-least-8.html?_r=0

---

And they are the ones that blew up all those people in the heart of Hezbollah Lebanon as they expand their borders in that direction too...

"ISIL said it had "struck its stronghold in the so-called security zone in southern suburbs of Beirut on Thursday ... in the first small installment of a heavy account that awaits these shameless criminals"."
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/04/us-lebanon-explosion-claim-idUSBREA0308S20140104

Yes!

---

But seems there's a revolt in central Al-Qaedastan...

Syrian rebels and activists have launched a second "revolution" nearly three years into the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, this time against a powerful Al-Qaeda affiliate accused of brutal abuses.

Battles have raged for two days across northern Syria since the newly formed Army of Mujahideen declared war on the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), with two massive rebel alliances joining the battle against the extremist group.

"The revolution has returned to its true path, and the rays of the sun have started to shine on Syria," Ibrahim al-Idelbi, an activist from the war-torn country's northwest with close ties to the rebels, wrote on his Facebook page.

Looks like we might not need to give Assad air support after all. Not that he's ever had a problem with Al-Qaeda in Iraq seizing half the country, he didn't want that half anyway, and it makes it our problem. Just like Al-Qaeda in Iraq was our problem when Saddam Hussein created them in the no-fly zone to torment us.

Re: Hey Plain Ol?

And this surprises you??? This administration has been anything but transparent, again, do you think there are no American military in Iraq??? Who is in the friggin' gigantic embassy??? I am sure there is a SOFA, but we don't know the details ... never will!!!

I have always been against going into Iraq, and never thought it was a good idea to stay there ... we should have split the country into 3 smaller countries, Kurds, Sunni and Shia, then left and allowed them to kill themselves as they have for centuries!!!

99% of the problems in the region are a result of the breakup of the Ottoman Empire after World War I based on oil, not religion/ethnicity!!!

Greetings Everyone!

This message is for everyone, but in particular, I am most curious as to what Plain Ol' American thinks about the latest news coming out of the "Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea" ("DPRK").

I have been watching videos from North Korea frequently,  and try to keep abreast with as much information as I can obtain, but most recently, the information seems to become more troubling than ever.

As Bear posted earlier,   Kim Jong Un has claimed to have executed his Uncle, who several months ago was the No. 2 Man in the DPRK.  If the reports are true,  (which seem to be eminating from Bejing)  then it is a most gruesome execution, of which Kim Jung Un and his Cabinent of 300 all watched.

What is I think just as interesting, is that Kim Jung Un's New Year's message three weeks ago claimed that "Dear Beloved Uncle"  had been killed by firing squad:

(Again, note how bizarre this video is to Western Standards!)

Two weeks ago,  Kim Jong Un started making references alluding to "Uncle"  being, "worse than a dog":

Today,  (Less than five hours ago, which is tomorrow, January 4th in the DPRK)  "Dear Uncle" was purportedly fed to ravished dogs with five os his aides:

Re: Hey Plain Ol?

Hey Brine,

Note the date of the PressTV  report.

On January 2, 2014,  the State Department, in particular Marie Harf was caught in an outright lie and refused to answer reporters' questions:
